Conceyted-- thanks for pix/info about ozone application thourgh your skimmer. I don't see any images with how you process the water / air of the skimmer. Many recommend treating both with carbon. Are you doing so or have you opted against that (not that I care if you do or not.... just that I'd like to see pix if you are ;-)

thanks

Kevin

Funny story. A while back when I ran the G3 I ran carbon atop my skimmer for air treatment and in my sump baffles for water treatment before it reentered the tank. Well, when I was moving my sump around to make way for my H&S in the stand I broke the sump! I improvised and had an old tidepool laying around I just ripped all the crap out of it and used the plastic container i was left with as a sump. Not even remembering I used to run carbon in the water and having no baffles to put carbon in, I completely forgot. You JUST reminded me that I havent run carbon on my tank in about 6 months! Holy crap!!!! And to be honest, my system has never looked better in the past 6 months. So to answer your question, no I do not run carbon. However! I run my ozone at 10mg. I have found at any more than 15mg I can smell ozone coming from the top of my skimmer meaning some is escaping into the air. With under 10mg I get no ozone smell and it seems to be doing just fine for my system. It polishes the water nicely and my skimmer skims like a champ!

I like the sound of that.... I'll run a fan down by the skimmer to ensure no build up of o3. with 10mg there is no way that could become an issue. Probably a lot safer than running 100mg with a silly carbon sock.

Do you notice any difference in quantity of skimmate running 10mg?

Anyone know where to buy metric pvc parts to custom plumb my H&S skimmer? I am looking for elbows and pvc. I am thinking of making my internal a recirculating. I have the 3 aquabee pump model.

Do you know where I can find the part highlighted on the following picture?

I glued the intake part to eliminate a leak and now I would like to re-plumb my gravity feed. and eliminate the nipple

my new A110, finally got it setup, i'm in the club

i have had this skimmer for a couple of months and now i could say i am part of the club as i just finished setting it up. i had to redo my sump setup on my 50 gallon cuz skimmer would not fit in old sump. skimmer running for about a week now. got it new from Ed at KMA Intl (one of the authorized dealers for H&S/Fins Reef). so glad that he is local to me as he and his partner has been so helpful with everything.

this is how new sump looks:

finish skimmer at 3am and this is how it looks at 8am. 1st day

Ed says I'm running too dry, so I will readjust. i am so glad he suggested a recirculating skimmer for my 50g reef, it's perfect. if anyone thinking about H&S equipment, don't hesitate. i was previously running a prizm on this tank and it never collected very much, so have a lot of catching up to do.

ed recommend me running a maxi jet 600 to feed the skimmer since i am lazy and didn't want to estimate Gall per hour. hope that helps

I'm officially in the Club

I'm officially in the Club

I installed my new H&S A150 on Sunday and dump the collection cup Tuesday as I had it set too high and it overflow with watery skim. This is what I got in 2 days and it has only been setup a total of 4 days, so still breaking in. This photo is 2 days of skimmate collected (trying to get as closeup as possible, not good at this). I'm pretty impressed at the foaming action within the skimmer, so this is a good purchase. Anyone thinking about buying any H&S equipment, I highly recommend KM Associates Int'l in San Francisco, they are great and so knowledgeable. I can't believe how many different model skimmers have they personally used, tested and evaluated as well as installed or sold.

Sounds like it is working alright for you. . .

The bubble breaking level seems a bit high. the skimmer may be prone to overflowing that way. I heard about 1-2 inches from the top of the riser tube. I keep mine around 1 to 1.5.

However, if it is working that way. . . I wouldn't tinker with it to much.

If you make any changes to the wedge pipe, do small (almost hairline) adjustments and observe how the skimmer reacts. Also adjust the skimmer a couple of hours after clean up.

Being patient and making slow changes will allow you to master the skimmer sooner. Once you have it the way you want it, it is clean and forget it.

Also, I keep the air line wide open. I used an air meter to measure, and wide open seems like the best setting.

Thanks AJ. The above photo is lowered already as the first 2 days, the skimmer overflowed. So far, 2 days, it hasn't overflow. I will wait and see before readjusting. I am using a Deltec air valve set at 1 o'clock. Ed mentioned that after 2 weeks, I probably want to have it fully opened. Thanks for the input, I will keep an eye on all that you mentioned.

AJ, you are right. My skimmer didn't overflow, but it collected a lot of water, so the color the the skimmate is very light now, diluted by the excess water. A little to wet for my preference, so I will adjust the bubble level down a 1/2" and see how it does the next few days.

RS, remember when adjusting down. . . Perform a small adjustment and give the skimmer time to react and change.

Question, how are you feeding the skimmer?

Eheim Compact1000 pump for now, may consider gravity feed later. Been doing a lot of reading on it.
I didn't want to mess with my overflow piping but wanted to feed my skimmer 100% overflow. I bought a $1 plastic pitcher and placed it in my sump, directed my overflow into the pitcher and placed my feed pump in it. The extra overflow simply flows over the top of the pitcher and into my sump while my skimmer gets 100% overflow feed. That way I don't have to try an adjust the amount of feed I send through the skimmer. It also lets you see what direct feed will do for your skimmer before you make overflow piping changes.

Great idea, thanks! This might be a good permanent solution as I'm thinking a nicely made acrylic box to house the overflow and feed pump would work. I have to see how much room I have to squeeze everything into the same area as I have to leave room for a H&S nitrate reactor.

Here's a update after 4 days since my very first collection cup dumping because I had the skimmer set to high and it filled up the collection cup overnight.. Actual color of the skimmate is a little bit lighter than the photo, more like dark tea color. This unit is doing great on my 180g, much better than the skimmers I've had on this tank earlier. I might be experiencing some catchup skimming, which I had no idea my previous skimmers might be leaving organics behind and not keeping up. We'll see what happens in the next few months to see if the skimmer slows down after any catchup. I am definitely happy with my purchase and the A150 is a perfect match for my 180g. Glad Ed talked me out of getting the A200 as I really don't need the extra edge on that bigger skimmer.
