Haddoni Treatment Progress

Thanks guys. I hope my experience as a complete noob with carpet anemones shows that you don't need to be an expert to take care of these but you do have to be dilligent, proactive and prepared to take care of these awesome animals.

Here is how it sits now:

Thanks! All is still well as of this morning. Tomorrow afternoon will mark the last dose of cipro and the anemone will be put back in the DT Wednesday afternoon. Still no word on whether or not the LFS has had any luck on sourcing a blue but I'll probably keep my treatment tank/equipment out after a thorough cleaning. I will probably go straight to treatment with a new carpet to avoid the transfer of infection to healthy specimens.

Very good. How have the water changes been? Any junk in the bottom of the tank?

Yeah our LFS here are hit or miss sometimes too.

The last 2 WC have been pretty much devoid of all dark junk. I've been pulling out the white/clear stringy stuff but nothing dark.

After giving them the "go ahead", our LFS owner did say he hadn't seen/heard of a bright blue coming through his source for a while so I was given a forewarning that it may take some time. I don't mind waiting for what I want. Not to mention, this gave me time to have a "test run" with this green haddoni. An expert I am not but at least I'm confident in the process at this point.

Yeah that is why I am setting up the 120 for my new blue gig... if it ever appears. LOL

Sand is in and now I am getting some of the rock structure.

Today marks the last day of treatment and, as if to celebrate, the anemone treated me this morning by being on full display. Using the width of the 10g tank as reference, I'd estimate this anemone to be roughly 10-11 inches in diameter.

That anemone looks like her is healthy now. keep hime medication free for a few days before put him back to the DT.
Good job.

I had planned on moving it back to the DT tomorrow but waiting a few days makes a lot of sense. Better than having to start over, anyway. Thanks for the tip.

Should I continue 50% water changes even after Cipro dosing is done or just top off to keep SG correct?

its looking good. maybe try to feed it a silverside to see if it will take it before u put it into the DT. IMO anything that is eating is healthy, and vise versa.

I personally would not feed, nor I would feed silversides. There's no need to "test" a recovery and it might put an extra strain on a nem that's using energy to acclimate. Nor would you want to add waste to the tank, even though water changes are done regularly.

I would stick with human grade food if you choose to try. As we discussed on a few threads prior, some have attributed a bad (spoiled/rotten) silverside as the cause of the death of their anemone. IMO, I don't think it's worth the risk when there's no benefit to feeding silversides over other foods. My food of choice is a small cube of salmon soaked in Selcon (or other vitamin enrichment). If you have access to needles, another good suggestion I read was to inject them with Selcon.

BTW... the haddoni looks great. Keep up the good work.

Good point, I always thought the silversides were the food of choice for carpets. but then again I never owned one due to the fear that one day I might come home and find my 400 dollar wrasse inside its mouth...

I do not intend on feeding the anemone while in treatment. I appreciate the help but it's always been a rule of mine to not feed any anemone silversides. I know anemones are capable of eating entire fish but I prefer to err on the side of caution.

I do intend on feeding this haddoni until it gets to the relative size I'm after (14-18") and then slowly taper back until it requires little/no feeding but that's going to happen in the DT.

D-Nak and/or OrioN, can you address my question about the continuance of water changes after Cipro treatment is done? Still 50% every day or dial it back a little since I'm not dosing anything?

I did the same feeding regiment that you're describing for my gig --after a week or so in the DT, and I was fairly confident it was healthy, I began feeding it regularly until it was the size I wanted, then I tapered off feeding. I still feed it occasionally as it feels like the nem perks up after feeding. It could just be me. :D

In terms of water changes in the QT tank after Cipro treatment was over, I scaled them back. This was due more to laziness though. I always keep an ammonia badge in my QT tanks -- so if the badge detected a rise in ammonia I did a water change (though this didn't happen with healthy nems, only sick ones). If you have the time and energy, water changes are probably the best way to go. If you're pulling water from the DT, it'll further help to condition the nem to "the real world".

Excellent idea. I had proposed doing all the water changes during Cipro treatment with water from my DT but I was advised against it so I did not. As time gets closer to moving it back to the DT, it makes perfect sense to use water from there now as it will help condition the anemone to the conditions it will see in the near future. Since I'm due for a water change in the DT, this suits my needs to a T. Thanks for the guidance!

Ordered some cirpo. Perfect carpet gone open mouth on me. Inflated, can close it at times, but acting goofy. Worst part is didn't have the meds on hand. It shipped so just hope it makes it in time.
