Halides....How High?

I just had a question I wanted to run by those using halides. How high above the water do you have them mounted? Is there a general rule of thumb? Just wondering....Thanks in advance!

I've always heard 10-12 inches, otherwise you risk burning the corals. That jives with what everyone else is saying here.
With a 400W I would go higher rather than lower. At least at first.

I've used anything from 3-4" to 8". For that big a bulb, I'd probably start fairly high. A lot depends on the reflector.

I would start high, then bring down an inch a time and keep an eye on the temp.

I personally run as close as possible to water surface without pushing too much heat.

Surface agitation and cross breeze via small fan can make a world of difference for heat and evap. JMO

High as being 15-18 inch to start with for the 400w. Dont underestimate thier output and heat. Keep checking and adjusting as needed.
