Halved a bristle worm.

I was catching a bristle worm in the tank last night with tweezers, and snapped him in half :) . Just wondering what affect that would have? I pulled out the head end, the back half retracted back into the rock.

Why were you pulling out the bristle worm?

WELL.....Bristle worms are OK in a reef tank. HOWEVER.... Depending on the size of the tank, It can become a bit out of control.

I have a small one in my Office BioCube....& its awesome to see it at times.

But I will keep an eye on him

After the show stopped filming, Flipper committed suicide due to severe depression. As I'm sure you know, dolphins breath voluntarily. Flipper simply stopped breathing.

I consider it negligence on the part of his handlers, plain and simple. We have a great responsibility toward those things we capture and make unable to provide for their own needs.

I could of course go on and on, linking it to all the world's ills, but I digress. ;]

I have several bristle worms in my 14G bio cube I didint think there was anything wrong with keeping them in there. Is there any reason that I should try and remove them. if so what is the best way to remove them

I hate they way they look. I don't have that many atm, so I was going to go ahead and try and snag them. I can always add some later if I choose, and I'm sure I'll get some more with additional rocks.

lanilx - they're a valued part of your cleanup crew. you're right - nothing wrong with keeping them there. plus catching them all may well be impossible.

While Bristleworms are very beneficial in our aquariums, an over-abundance can be a pain. Some say that if you have a population boom of them, it's due to overfeeding. I'm not so sure this is true. I have a 10 gallon tank that I use strictly to grow pods and Macro Algae. It's been running for almost 2 years and not once been fed. I would think, that in 2 years, any population of Bristleworms would have ate all the available detritus. However, every once in awhile, that tank experiences a population boom.

Not sure how any of this relates to this thread....lol.

Bristleworms are the earthworms of the sea. They are great detritavores, can be invaluable to DSBs, and I find their presence a reassuring sign of my tank's good health. I haven't been running my tank long enough to have any problems with them, but I suspect it is better to control them thru food supply and water conditions than a pluck and stomp approach.

On the other hand, perhaps you enjoy hunting worms. In which case, happy hunting. :)

There is nothing to worry about as far as Bristle worms. Just keep a eye on them as far as how big they are & the size of your tank.

When I had the 100 gal up and running, there was this one - probably the grand dad, it was about 1/2" in dia and about 18" long. He was coming out of one hole, three rocks back and still traveling. looked scary.
