Has anyone been a newbi and started with sps?

But I thought a deep sand bed was good?
DSB's are good but are hard to maintain. Many people credit their tank crash to the DSB. Because of the toxic buildup in the anaerobic area, you have to be careful not to disturb that layer of sand. Here's a great thread on how a DSB works. I think that the more you know, the better educated decision you will make.

Ok this is a little off topic but because water flow is very important how many gph should I have in my 75 gallon sps tank?

Aye, or keep it in the sump.

20x turnover is about average; the more the merrier, as long as it isn't too laminar. Look up the carlson surge device.

not nearly enough for an SPS dominant tank. If you're shooting for SPS dominant, more like 50x-150x.

2 mp40's would be about right.

So what would be a better turn over?

My current tank is 150x, but I realize it's a little extreme.

For that size tank, I'd use 2 mp40's, which is about 85x.

It's all situationally dependent though, there isn't one set way to do it. It requires a fair amount of experimentation and patience.

Well I guess I'm going to be the 1% because I've already invested $1,000 in it and I'm one of those people who when they put thier mind to it they do it gbru316 I would prefer doing four power heads do to the fact that I've already invested in a red sea wave master pro I would like to go back to the subject of a DSB and find out from you guy wether you have a DSB and if you recommend it or not and if those of you who have one have had anything go wrong with yours or not

Has anyone started the hobby keeping sps corals and had succes?

Txboi, you can if you do a lot of research in advance. I dove right into SPS when I started my first SW tank Jan 2012. I have been using LEDs and my corals are growing and coloring nicely.

Follow the tank of the month threads and see how those guys keep such nice tanks. I guess my one tip would be "keep your hands out of the tank."

Good luck!

I never recommend to do what I do, but I consider myself a noob and my first tank just turned a year old and I started with the "easy" corals and then to the "easy" sps with in months. For me sps do the best in my tank.

But I did do tons of reading before I ever purchased my tank.

I think all successful tanks have great lighting, great flow and great water conditions. But, I'm sure you know that already. :)

Remember money and equipment does not equal success in this hobby.

There is a lot more to be said for biology then technology imo.

Research, research, research.

Keep it simple, don't rely on gagets. Above all else its about husbandry. Keep a log, test regularly and water change reguarly.

Best of luck and take it slow.

My first coral was an sps. First I bought an orange digitata then a blue acro. The poor acro has been bleached and browned out so many time but it's still around! After I got the hang of it my whole tank is sps and the original blue acro is softball size and I frag it quite often!
