I had my hand in my tank today to do a bit of rearragning and my Niger Trigger came after me. He is about 4 inches long and has always been very shy. Infact when I was combining my tanks into a 180 and was pulling the rock out he wedged himself in the rock and I didn't even know. So he never got acclimated but it was never a problem. He was fine. I have heard that Triggers will bite. So anyone?
Has anyone ever been bit by a Trigger?

i have a niger 3" and a huma 2" we have a joke in our house that you should always know where your nancy is at all times (niger) because they are known to nip. I din't used pay to much attention to any of my fish they are use to me being in their tank, but one day she must have thought i look good to eat and she bit my arm i din't hurt too bad but i had teeth marks on my arm for about a week. so now i always know where my nancy is. she has never gone after me since so i guess i don't tast to good after all :>

Yes I have been bitten by one of my triggers. In fact, I think every fish in the tank has bittem me at one point or another. But the trigger was the worst, it left a mark. From then on, I had my wife spot me when I needed to work in the tank. Right now I have a 2" spotted puffer that I'm scared of, he is so bold I can't believe it.

I caught a large puffer while fishing in baja. While removing the fly from his jaw, he bit me. I could not believe the power! Totally crushed my thum. My thumbnail turned purple, then black. I eventually lost the nail.
My thumb was throbing the whole rest of the trip and some time after.
Dont underestimate the dosile appearance of Mr. Puffer!!

I was with a friend that owns a Reef store here in Brazil... and an Odonus Niger (medium size) was so agressive that when he put the hand near the water surface, the fish just swim above the water trying to bit the hand...

My Picasso got me a couple of times.
One must be careful with fish that have teeth.
P.S. He also lets me pet him. That is after he has been fed. :lol:

I've only been bit by the female of my Ocellaris pair (that's HER powerhead, not mine)
But when we were on a deep sea fishin trip (have a condo in Florida) someone caught a Trigger, and he said to be careful cause they've seen some pretty nasty bites from them.

A resident (with a doctorate, so he wasn't totally stupid) on the island where I used to live cornered a Picasso Trigger in a piece of live rock. It was a big one, and had wedged itself into the hole in the rock. The guy decided to push it out backward, putting his finger on the fish's nose, then in the fish's mouth. He lost almost a half inch of his fingertip in one bite. As jbird says, puffers are almost as bad, and can easily crush the bones on your fingers.

I got bit by a puffer once down in Florida. It had gotten caught up in the surf and washed in. I thought I'd be a good citizen and throw it back out. I looked in its mouth and didn't see any teeth (hey it looks like a catfish mouth) so I figured I would pick it up with my thumb and index finger. I could not believe the power that fish had in his jaw. He clamped down so hard that I thought my thumb was coming off. I flung my hand in the air and the fish went flying. I didn't lose my nail but it throbbed and was purple for days.

Certainly one of the most feared fish in many parts of the Philippines is the Titan Trigger. I have seen it attack a diver in the head on one occasion and on another attack and mangle a divers fin. The Titan in the wild can be a big fish. Fortunately the first attack to the head, where the Titan hit the diver at full throttle after about 40 feet, was but a glancing blow but, wow, that was something I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of.
Here in L.A. the two people I know with large tanks with Crosshatch Triggers have both been bitten by them.

as a kid, long before i knew anything about saltwater fish i was into african cichlids and i would stick my finger in the tank i had with juvies cause i thought it was cool how they would attack my finger. fortunately they didn't have large teeth, but the baby trigger at the lfs i stupidly decided to try the same thing with certainly did.:eek1:
