Has this hobby GONE NUTS!!!!!

On the topic of chalices...you rarely see a tank with big chalice/ "high end" zoas/ large acan colonies. Instead you see tanks filled with a bunch of tiny frags, which look great when shot with a macro lens, but nowhere near as good as a tank full of mature SPS colonies. IMO of course, no offense intended to anybody with a tank filled with tiny chalices.

I agree with you, and in my opinion too many of them just clutters up the sanbed and doesn't even look that good. Under a macro lens, sure they are very nicely colored/vivid and sweet looking. With that said, I do have one LE Chalice..... I'm just glad the prices for acros and chalices are not reversed.

Actually, I have some large, nice "named" chalices, glued to my rocks. But why the heck are we talking about this in the SPS forum? ;)

Thats true, on the rocks looks nice. Also true, I think this was a thread for the LPS forum because there are not many SPS that are "200,300,400 for tiny frags" as stated in the original post.

the hobby or the hobbyist? I recently had a transformer go bad on the pole and blew some equipment out due to the surge followed by the brown out and when i put the claim in my insurance agent looked at it like i was crazy lol.. 450 dollars for a pump vortechs 3 of them and my controller 900 bucks etc .. luckily i have all my receipts ..

IMO, some Chalices that are sold for $50-$60 a frag is a very fair price if it looks very nice. Like this MT Hear Breaker Chalice that I have(this is a frag I sold not too long ago, I've got a mother colony which is where this frag came from) And, the Chalice is grown/picture was taken under 150 watt HQI 14k Phoenix bulb that runs 8 hours a day, no supplemental light/actinics either.

Hmm, this frag seems familiar.:spin3:

Maybe if we all just traded with each other we wouldn't need threads about how insane coral prices can get.

Yea I am actually changing my tank from lps to sps just so I am not tempted to buy those $300 frags anymore.

I think if you really took a look around you would see that prices
are close to half retail on rc and other hobbist type markets
with the exception of people that are new to selling there frags

$50-$75 named sps frags can be bought in a multiple piece frag packs for under $200

as for the expensive chalises wwc's my miami goes for $1000
I've seen about 3 in the past few months here for $500

all corals are not created =
the price of a birds nest frag should not be compaired to
a " add your fravrite coral here"

Not as many as you stated but the most recent sps I've seen overpriced is the 'red dragon'. Because of that cool name it has to be worth $200-300?

Not that I'd pay that price, but I have to admit that the shape and color of that coral are pretty unique, IMO.

We probably haven't seen anything yet. Sooner or later they are going to make it much harder to get wild corals. When that happens, you can bet that the price of captive propagated corals will go through the roof.

Personally, I kinda miss the days when folks preferred to trade vs. sell.

There are still some sps that are overpriced. The newer LE ones go for $100 for a 1/2" piece. That's a little ridiculous. I'm just glad I'm patient

What really gets me are the tiny stubs that some of these people are selling. I would be embarrassed if someone came to my house and I sold a 3/4 to 1 in. frag. I hear people say that they need to trim there colonies and end up selling these tiny little things.

When I sell frags, I like to give folks some value w/ 2 1/2 to 3 inch branching frags, and usually throw in freebies galore.

If you want to get rich, this is not how to do it.
