hatchig shark egg

You just need to wait it out and give the egg case good water quality, circulation, etc. The shark will hatch when it is ready. Not something I thought about with sharks, but you will need to keep the tank tightly covered. I had mine in a "pond" and fed him by-hand at the edge. One day he jumped out (I think he may have been looking for food, but at least they have the ability to jump, so be aware of that).

Small pieces of squid were good food items to entice it to eat soon after it first hatched. I think he liked the smell. Then be ready for him to grow! HTH

Not really. You shouldn’t really help the pup open the egg at all, even when it seems as though it's struggling to get out of the case. It'd be hard to fight the urge to help the pup though.

Also, it might be better to just by a young shark rather then an egg. The chances that the egg will never yield can be more then half percent. And not to mention that after it hatches, getting the newborn to eat will be difficult as well. But if you buy a young shark, you'll lose the satisfaction of watching the eggs develop and hatch.

I hadn’t realized that you’ve bought an egg. I would just wait patiently and check the egg often to make sure the embryo is still alive. You can hold up the egg so that light shines through it to see if he’s alive and moving. Be careful not to lift the egg out of the water as you can get air inside of the case. Also check for fungus or rotten smell.

Depending on temperature and how developed the egg was when you bought it, the pup can hatch anywhere from tomorrow to a few months. The incubation period for bamboos is, I think, around 5 months or so. The best way to see when it is about to hatch is to look at the developing pup relative to the size of the case. When he does hatch, which will probably be over night, try to resist helping him out. But if it seems as though he stuck, you can enlarge the hole on his egg case a little with a pair of scissors.

Lastly, the pup will probably not eat until a couple of days after hatching. So don’t be discouraged if he doesn’t eat right away.

Donny, how do you check for a rotting smell without taking it out of the water??? Or is it pungent enough to make the water smell too??? Just wondering...
