Lysiosquillina maculata

Can't say that i have, but I have heard of LFS's getting them in from time to time. L. macs need a really deep sand bed and U" shaped burrows under it. They live in monogamous pairs (if I remember correctly) and I think a board member owns a true pair. I don't remember who exactly, but I think it is Medellia (Whos got more mantises than anyone on this board other than Dr. Roy I think....). It is hard tofind a male/female pair and it is likely you'll only get a male if you do find one.

do i really have that many mantids?!? sheesh...doesn't seem like that many. oh well--so many species, so little time ;)

I found both of my L macs at a LFS, and happened to luck out and get a true pair! they are such a cool species, and i could not believe my luck when i found the first one, which is the male. the next week, the LFS got another one in, and although i was sure it was another male, went to check anyway. it turned out to be female!
i introduced them recently in a large tank, and they paired up immediately. the male does most of the hunting, and feeds the female. they are awesome, and it is even better to be able to watch how they interact as a pair.
i know i have posted these pics before, but oh well--here they are again. hopefully i will get a chance to take new pics of them soon.

:D

usually the L macs are pretty deep in their burrow, so i rarely even see eyes, except at feeding time. then you get a split-second flash of their dactyls, and then they are gone again.

most of the time i keep the front of the tank covered with black plastic, which i can remove to check on them or take photos. they are beautiful and fascinating animals, but not something that i get to see a lot of. i try to avoid disturbing them as much as possible.
they are definitely not the species for everyone, but i think they are well worth the effort :)

wow, really a spectacular species you have. i dont suppose you have a full tank shot of that particular set up, do you?

Tongs in fountain valley has 2 for sale right now. They've had them about a month, maybe because they are priced at $150 each. Tongs is off the 405, cross streets are warner & magnolia. Beautiful species, i was thinking about getting a hex tank and buying them.

the ones at tongs are pretty big like 5 inches each at least. They still have them, I was there tonight. Tongs is in Orange County, not Los Angeles.

408mike they are worth buying if you have money, in decent shape too. I'm sure you might be able to work with them a little on the price since they have been there at least 2 months. Good luck.

5" is small for an L. Mac, the species can get about 16" long full grown to the max, capable of catching and killing a fish half its size and pretty aggressive when an anything comes close to its burrow

i can get one in, and i am actually going to get one for my office and put it in a 37G column tank...$80 is what im paying i believe

i am working on some full tank shots...just need to clear the tank out a little so i can get some decent pics! right now it is kind of crowded because of all the extra havanensis in their temporary housing. i unexpectedly got twice the number that i ordered, and had to come up with emergency housing for 4 extra shrimp. i have them in little plastic breeder boxes and "betta condos" hanging all over the sides of the L macs' tank ;) so as soon as i get them all in permanent tanks, i will have a clear shot of the tank so you can see how it is set up.

basically, i have the tank divided lengthwise with a sheet of acrylic. the front compartment (about 6" wide) is filled with sand , where the L macs have their burrow. the back section of the tank is basically a refugium, with live rock and macroalgae (and havanensis). their burrow is made from 4" plastic tubing, cut in half, with a coat of crushed coral embedded in silicone sealant.
hope that all made sense...

so far this setup has been working great...the L macs never leave their burrow, so i assume they like it :)
