hawaii trip/ get livestock

I did but that was before the liquid band, I brought 6 fishes home. Hand carried onto the plane. Went through custom and the guy ask me what kind of food is it 
, I told him it was live fish .
You can't carry on the plane with you anymore, however, you can have the fish store box it up and check it in.

What about corals? Do you still need a collection permit? I'm guessing you do, but I wonder how they regulate that.

So... kind of like when you take a rock from that volcano over there? And your whole life is ruined untill you return it?

robertloop that saying is a good ol' folklore tale that us locals on the islands made up to scare tourists from messing around with the beauty that Hawaii has to offer...
But, I think the tale went a little like this, although i could be wrong since i learned this one from my neighbor:
If you were to take a piece of rock, any type of rock may it be volcano rock, dirt, sand, or even ocean rock (live rock) than the fire god "pele" will awaken and bring misfortune to you until that piece you took is returned to it's owner, "pele" the fire god who lives in the volcano...
(See it's a nice story isn't it.... Hehehehe!!!)
However, being a local i always grabbed a few rocks here and there for when i go to vacation so that i can put it in my saltwater tank here in CA...Helps remind me of the place I came from...
And it also makes for a good tale to ward of those pesky tourists...Come on if every single tourist that comes to visit Hawaii were to take a frag or cup or chip of rock from Hawaii than the islands would eventually get smaller and smaller faster and than there wouldn't be any reefs, corals, fish, or even a bunch of islands called HAWAII left now would there... (lol)

Raymond, what part of the island you from? You from the main island?
You can collect from the island, but just to be safe it's best you get your paperwork together before you attempt to even bring anything back. Because there are certain spots where it is just illegal, and if the max quota for the year already been met you can no longer collect as well.

I'am actually from Oahu born and raised and now reside in Sacramento...
Like i said i grabbed some live rocks from Hawaii...More specifically Ko 'Olina on the West coast of Oahu...and when i brought it back and went through Hawaii customs they asked me what it is...And i said it is soveneirs for my fish tank and they let me go ahead anyways...Although customs might be different now...
Well actually it was three suitcases full wrapped in black plastic bags and newspaper to keep it wet...But dang it stunk like crap...and probalby weighed a total of 100 lbs...
the rocks were teaming with marine life...From sponges to crabs to urchins...The amazing thing is that most the lime green and purple urchins that were on there survived the trip but died when i was cooking the rock or "cured" the rock for a month...I also had like 10 lbs of sand from the beach too..
If i go back anytime soon I would certainely grab some more things since me and Pele are best buds...(lol)

It is illegal to correct rock from Hawaii. Despite stories to the contrary I wouldn't risk going to jail for my reef tank.
Collecting fish is not as simple as throwing it in a bag the day you catch it and putting it on an airplane. More than likely you'll wind up with a dead fish when you land.

I could understand a kid taking a little rock for his souvenir, but for an adult to take 100 lbs (three suitcase full) is completely irresponsible. Just because you were able to fool custom does not make it right. -I'am terribly sorry that i may have offended some people here about bringing some rocks home that have been encrusted by some marine life such as marine algae some sponges and urchins (no corals or fish)
Just to clarify what i said: The rocks were dumped and moved around to make a manmade resort that had three manmade harbors that is now called Ko'Olina...So in many ways the rock is basically dead rock that was being encrusted with typical marine life... And not original "live rock" from an actual reef but right on the beach itself...Perhaps where the water was only 2 feet deep...
-Also the rocks weighed almost 100lbs because they were really dense and really seemed like little boulders of cement and not fiji premium porous live rock...In total i brought home maybe 12 rocks that were about 8-10 lbs. each...
And when i told customs about it, I straight out told them that it was for my 80 gallon fish tank...And they even checked all of the carefully wrapped rocks for any fish or corals which they did not find...so they let me pass...
-(juaninsac) this experience was more than 5 years ago so perhaps the law might have changed since then to the extent that one can go to jail... But, I could be wrong...
However, your correct Minh that i may have been irresponsible for mistakenly promoting these actions...And i really did not intend for people to get mad, I just wanted to share my experience in this hobby... And, the last thing I would hate to do or have happen is for hobbiyst to emulate these actions despite i mentioned that the rocks were not really broken off a real reef of some sort...
-We all make mistakes...buying a fish when you know it's a wild one and not a aquacultured one, we decide to keep anemones, corals, etc even though we know that the world's oceans are loosing reefs everyday, and we even make a mistake that more than one person could be guilty of, and that is when someone takes a piece of rock from a beach...
-I admit that i problaby made another mistake on this forum but, hey we all make mistakes one time or another and we can all learn from those mistakes...

One side says that the fish will live years longer in a well kept reef tank... Others get all bent and jump up and down sighting (sp?) laws. Even if its hear say law. I for one, dont belive you owe anyone an apology. The negative assuptions/preconceived notions mentioned about you above are quite ignorant and way too "pull the trigger". This is common place in an (IMHO) extremely liberal society.
