Hawaiian legislature to ban aquarium trade

I miss snorkeling in Hawaii: Lanikai, Hanauma Bay, Molokini... And the Hawaiians really love their reefs, for good reason. I loved swimming with all the tangs, wrasses, triggers, Idols, so I can see their concern.

I understand their concern as well. However, the scientific evidence shows that Hawaiian fishery populations have improved since the current management program was put in place. This bill is based on emotions, not evidence.

I see their concern and I've snorkeled in Kawaii and it was outstanding! I do understand why they would want to ban it but I'm hoping they don't. I have quite a few specimens from Hawaii as well that might apparently become pretty rare.

Let's just hope they use their brains on this one and stop the legislature otherwise there will be a lot of fish that we stop seeing in the trade. Also fish that usually come thru Hawaii like black tangs will be few and far between

It will be interesting to see how it plays out. I'm friends with the brother of the guy that Sea Shepard had harrassed under water. They both dive and collect in HI. They said it has gotten very antagonistic. All the scientific reports I have read say the same thing, that the fishery is actually very healthy and sustainable. These folks are reacting from an emotional place. I could be wrong, but pretty sure they don't collect in the same places that folks snorkel.

Yellow tangs will be the fish most impacted. Expect $ to go up on those.
