to the offending aiptasia. I guarantee you won't have any left.

Wow - I had no idea people are still using torches to kill Aiptasia! When I was an aquarist at the Shedd Aquarium back in the 1980's, I remember the reef aquarist doing that, and I've always joked about it.....

The best control methods I know of (aside from not letting them get out of control in the first place) is calcium hydroxide slurry injections (with all safety precautions) or a good Australian copperband butterflyfish.

plus 1 I use it all the time and works great other then that you have to be willing to break down your rock rock periodically to get at them with a paring knife eventually they are gone

hint quarantine

i've burned them off before but there are always a few you'll miss .try to do it outside as not to smell up your house. and get afew pepermints to help pick up the slack .i'm now down to 2 or 3 left that i can see waiting to see how the shrimp do before i burn them off again

Peps are hit and miss at best, or perhaps it depends on what else there is to eat in your tank. I have tried over a dozen in the last 4 years without success.
I have watched peps devour aptasia like starving wolves at the LFS, then brought them home and they never eat a single one in my tank.

Used peps and Mrs.balls pickling lime. You find it by the canning supplies at the grocery store I use 1 tble spoon of powder to 2 tsp of ro water heatin microwave 20 seconds stir let cool then fill up the syrindge and go to town. You get a 1lb of the stuff for about $3.00 will last forever just don't overdo it .You'll change the PH

fwiw, i have taken out massive infestations of aiptasia twice with a pepp squad. 6 at a time. they are bold in a pack and inside of a month they got every single last aiptasia. even the big ones.

realistically, i'm not sure you can hand pick every aiptasia out, and it only takes one to start the whole debacle over again if you miss it.

I had aiptasia and peppermint shrimp had no effect. I used stuff from the LFS and it worked. Some were missed, so I got more peppermint shrimp. Still nothing. I tore down the LR and treated every one of them. That was a year ago and still no aiptasia or peppermint shrimp!

see if you can find a Berghia nudibranch awsome aiptaisia eaters and when they are done eaiting aiptaisia they die as aiptaisia are there only source of food.

I had a few ap on some LR I got from a friend. Most places wanted $15 + for what was probably not PS.. found a place with them for $6 and they were the real deal, no more ap - almost overnight.

Make sure it's lysmata wurdemanni, many LFS sell Lysmata californica and even R. durbanensis as PS. Trick on the id is if they're almost clear except for the red stripes, then it's ps. :furious:

I realize that the peppermint shrimp are somewhat hit or miss. I have quite a few aiptasia in the sump and the overflow but now I don't have any in the DT. I bought a Kelin's butterfly for my reef tank and he has done a great job cleaning out the DT. For the overflow I am still doing the scrape and inject method to try and get rid of them. Slow process but I am starting to see results.

Berghia do work well, however, the Nudibranch you posted a picture of, is NOT a Berghia.

If your going to take the rock out and torch it, why not just grill it on the grill? More of a set it and forget it technique if you ask me..
