Help: Dinoflagellates

So my dinos have been gone for 2 days now. I did one full day of no lights and then a day of pure blue lights at a small percentage. No lights in the fuge for 4 days. I added the carrib sea stuff but I have to admit it binds the dinos but I think the addition of mb7 was key to the success, last time and this time.
Maybe the key is adding a bacteria and then a liquid carbon source. Whatever it is they are gone for now. I will do a WC Saturday with NSW to see if this limits the regrowth.

Pittbullover, explain your steps to your Hydrogen peroxide approach, before someone Nukes their tank???

I bumped my PH up, picked up some bacteria additive and turned my lights off for 2 days. So far it looks like all of the dino has died. I ran my lights today and did not see any signs of it returning. I am going to cross my fingers and hope it stays gone this time.

there was a thread using hydrogen peroxide 1ml per 10 gal. the reported results were promising and occurred quickly.

The only issue I see in wiping out the dinos with hydrogen peroxide is that won't it kill desired micro fauna as well. I don't hink the peroxide has a single agenda when added to our aquariums. Wouldn't pods and other positive bacteria driven organisms die with the dinos?

Ive had problems with dino's for a while. I finally got to a point where they stopped getting worse, they just stay at the same level. I purchased some BRS biopellets, I'm gunna give them a try and see how they work out. I'm also concentrating on maintaining alk and calcium levels to see if this helps. (My alk has been swinging a lot and Im installing dosing pumps to keep level constant). I'll be making a thread when I hook up the biopellets with pictures and a log of tank parameters.

I've tried days without light, no water changes, large water changes, syphoning, blasting, wet skim, UV sterilizer, carbon bags, heavy GFO. I ran a UV for 2 years without any problems, then the dino's came and actually don't use the UV anymore and my tank doesnt look different.

I believe I may be getting the upper hand on my battle as the dino's aren't spreading anymore, but they're also not receeding. Their numbers appear to be less concentrated than before and I'm also running a normal light cycle.

I started running a UV and dosing peroxide 2 days ago.

Uv didn't work in my case. The biopellets will probably make it worse. I had them in for 2 weeks when I got dinos. I need better ro water, that might be the trick.

I too have dino problems. They really broke loose after dosing vodka in my system. I'm sure that wasn't the only factor in it though.

Anyway, I went a day and a half lights out and it didn't make a dent. I dosed 5mL of peroxide this afternoon and the tank already looks better. Some of the black fuzz on the sand is all but gone and the dinos have receded quite a bit. I'm going to keep everything the same and just dose peroxide daily and see what happens. I'll try to remember to get back to this post with results, but feel free to PM me as I'll likely forget.

Definately! They have reduced in number but seem to be on the rise again. Can someone post a link to the thread on using Hydrogen Peroxide?

There's an excellent thread on another website where dosing directions and experiences are documented. I read through all 8 pages of it this morning and am on day 3 of peroxide dosing. I'm very optimistic.

One thing I've noticed since dosing peroxide is my skimmate color has darkened considerably. The foam itself has taken on an earwaxy yellow / brown color and the sludge is a very dark brown.

I'm dosing 1ml per 10 gallons daily.

do you have corals/inverts? and if so, have you seen any effects from the hydrogen peroxide? TIA

I also seen that thread. It is what made me pull the trigger on peroxide. I have been trying to get rid of dinos for months now. I have tried high pH, more water changes, less water changes, no water changes, extra GAC, extra GFO, multiple 72 hours lights out, siphoning them out, I've tried letting them go so hopefully they would crash on their own, I've even tried a small self induced bacterial bloom to see if I could out compete them during a 3 days lights out, and bio pellets. The only thing left is getting a UV sterilizer from emperor aquatics (so I know its good quality) and dosing h2o2. I am getting a UV Sterilizer after the new years and I've been dosing hydrogen peroxide since Friday.

I don't think hydrogen peroxide if used safely is bad, it is just really really really easy to overdo and being such a strong oxidizer once you do overdo it then it can cause some serious damage. I am following the 1mL per 10 gallons. I'm on day 5 of dosing and haven't noticed anything negative effects on my corals/inverts/fish. I also started a 3 days lights out on Friday and I am going to do 2x 72 hour blackout periods separated by just 4 hours of actinics all while dosing hydrogen peroxide and keeping my pH high. I figured if that doesn't get rid of them then I'm just SOL. :mad2:

I started the peroxide dosing last night. I will let everyone know how it goes. I'm keeping the lights on the normal photo period to see how it performs with lighting.

I went ahead and bought a new bottle of peroxide today since my bottle is quite outdated. I'm concerned that it may not be at it's full potential. I've also started another lights out period.

Well today is the 7th day of dosing H2O2 and I haven't seen any adverse effects yet. I also uncover the tank and turn the lights back on today. I did a 3 days lights out then 4 hours of actinics then another 3 days lights out back to back all while dosing hydrogen peroxide.

I also experimented a little and dosed H2O2 twice in a day to see what would happen, once when I woke up and again right before I went to bed. During the week I also tried doing 1.5mL per 10 gallon a day to see what effect that would give me. Still everything looks ok.. However I wouldn't suggest doing that just because I'm sure there are a ton of variables and what works for me won't always work for you.

I am a little nervous to turn the lights back on just because I am afraid I'll see it come back.. it will probably break my heart, lol :(

So far all corals and all fish accounted for. Haven't seen any dino strands pop up yet the daylight bulbs are to come on in about 10 mins so only time will tell then. I still don't have my hopes up just because they [dinoflagellates] have been bullet proof thus far.
