I have a large maroon clown ive had for years and ive noticed white spots on its right flank starting from behind the gills and extending back to the tail fin. I know what ich is but this is not it. It looks like a bleaching or flaking of single scales. meaning they turn white. Id put a pic up but my camera is inop, if anyone has an idea what this could be and a good treatment ill do more research to verify. I love that old girl!

Could be a few different things. Your best bet is to look up saltwater fish diseases on a search engine and try to find something similar. I wish I could help more, but with out a pic, it's virtually impossible.

here is a pic, any idea?

I have a theory but might be crazy. Could it be damage from a large carpet anemone? I have a large on in the system. There is a big storm going on right now, and whenever the power jumps the fish dart for cover. I saw the fish a few hours ago and there were no marks and now all of a sudden there they are? Seems too fast for a disease to take hold. The spots seem round and outline the fin. Might have darted right into it......

i believe it is possible. do you have facilities to quarantine the perc for a few days to see if the condition clears? Or to remove the anemone, just for a while to see if it is the anemone that is affecting the clown?

Its the next day and the clown looks great. The white patches seem to have all but gone. The few that are left are almost like hanging skin. I am convinced i am right about the anamone causing the damage. Ive never had a problem with it getting a fish the last few years its been in but after this scare I might move it to another system. Funny, a friend of mine was watching me clean the tank the other day and saw the anamone catch the back of my hand as I was working by it. He commented that he was suprised it hadnt gotten a fish...........

it sounds like things are back to normal and everythings ok. keep monitoring anyhow and good luck!
best wishes.
