Help for an impatient new reef owner

Have a deal on some corals from a guy who is moving (brain, trumpet, cabbage leather(2),mushroom rock(large green),pavona cup,anemone,starfish(2))

I am in week one of my intial cycle. Current readings. AM .25, Nitrate 10, Nitrite 0.

Can the coral survive today in the tank? How bad will the cycle be when the second shipment arrives? My first shipment never has gone above .5 AM.

Hate to pass up this great deal on corals. for all of these and a Pinpoint he is asking $200. Shoud I pass or go for it. May be able to wait another week before I have to pick up.

Is it better to short cycle and get the second shipment sooner? or wait for all 0's and then get it.

Need some sugestions.

Richard? You know best. Show me the way.

Here is how I see it in its simplest form.

If you wait...

You will not possibly lose 200 dollars in corals.

If you do not

You have a greater chance of losing 200 dollars in corals

I got busy acquiring stuff on the early side and have suffered a few losses. The rock will be good to go no matter what you decide to do.

Waiting is no fun but in hindsight neither is losing some realy cool looking specimens.

Have Fun!

Kurt

being impatient is the number one killer in reef keeping, sadley i also learned this the hard way..

Hey I don't know..., just thinking out loud, (which often gets me in trouble) but if you can get the tank water to from your buddy, may be you could hold them in a rubbermade tub with a heater, light & skimmer, some might die off but they suffer worse being collected and shipped don't they?

But I agree don't put them in your tank yet, it won't be pretty.

Here is a thought. I see that Richard has been giving some corals to the lucky package buyers. They are surviving the second cycle and doing OK, is it that they are hardier than most.

Do like the Q tank idea. Need one anyhow, why not make it a holding tank for a small time. If I use orrowed water form the tank the corals are living in today, I should be OK. Do worry about lighting though.

Perhaps the LSF will care for them for me. Worth an ask.

Do understand fish is an absolute no-no. but I have very small corals in the tank today that are doing great.

Come on tank..........Get done already.

hmm why do you come back form fantasy land and we can talk about it.

#number one it will throw you cycle into a whirlwind #number 2 kiss you TBS Guaranty goodbye

read the website follow our direction and you will be a happy reefer

don't get me wrong I hear your addicted side been there :)

DOH! I just read your post again this is your initial cycle

ok listen carefully put down the crack pipe and step away from the tank.

now ask the person selling if they will hold till you are ready if not please don't kill innocent reef inhabitants we hold some responsibility as reefers

Pretty strong responce from someone just asking a question. My prayers must be being answered because the tank is getting very close to being done with the 1st cycle. AM 0, Nitrate 10, Nitrites 0. Next week 2nd half, with good luck another week cycle and will be ready for some corals.

Obviously I asked the person to hold the corals as long as possible; and he will. Was just posing a question to the forum to get sugestions. Its a great deal and the smart capitalize on thsmart deals.

Am I addicted yes, stupid no. Just asking for advice. Take some advice......Relax, check out your tank, have a drink.

I just don't see the need to kill corals and such due to impatience
I feel very strong about that.
the ocean may or may not be replenishable source of our enjoyment. it is one of the main reasons I went with TBS aquacultured rock
any how I was being somewhat sarcastic but with that said the advice still stands slow down, no they wont survive as well as it does not follow the directions if the package so be aware you will void any guaranty TBS has.

and once again I do understand how you feel I have been there too :)

Thanks. It apears my first shipment has gone through its cycle, we will see for due tommorow. Then the second shipment and its cycle.

Plan on waiting as long as possible for the deal for the corals and hope the second shipment has fully cycled first.

The qt tank or my LSF may also hold the pieces for me.
