hello,

i was at the lfs yesterday and they had what appeared to be a couple saltwater gar in stock. the guy didn't know the name, but said they were reef safe. they looked cool, but i'm not putting anything in my tank without researching it. hoping someone would be able to identify them...

they were only about 3-4" long, all gray with a couple different shades in the pattern, long needlefish / gar like toothed nose, appeared to bottom dwellers all resting on the bottom, and the side fins were rather large and wing like.

sorry i didn't get a pic...

looked like a cross between a sea robin and a gar/needlefish.

any ideas on what they are?

Could be a tropical barracuda. Their fairly common in the industry. IME very skiddish and do not take well to captivity.

i don't think it's a barracuda. the snout actually looked like one off a gar or needle fish, except these appeared to be bottom dwellers.

Maybe a Crocodilefish of some sort?

I know alligator gars are found in saltwater, I am sure others are as well. It could of been a gar.
