Help! Looking for skimmer...

The tank I'm setting up is a 120G. mixed reef. I've been looking online for a skimmer.

In the RC for sale area there are two ASM skimmers. One is a G2 for $100 shipped the other is a ASM G3 for $140 + shipping.

What's your opinion of the ASM G series? Assuming it's a worthwhile skimmer, which one do you think would better fit my needs?

If anyone local has a :smokin: hot skimmer they want to sell, let me know that too! Always better to buy local!!

Thanks,
John

ASM are good skimmers but not as efficient as some of the other brand. I think they use a sedra 5000 pump. I used to have a G3 and it works fine for my 210 full of sps.

Well we seem to have a slight difference of opinion here :) ! It's like trying to read the reviews on Amazon! Zero stars vs. 4&5 stars...

I need more data points!

I have a Euroreef ES5-3 (or one of the copycats)... it's missing the pump and a plastic lid for the collection cup.

So basically the plastic shell. You'd have to buy a sedra pump.

You can have it for $30 (if you want).
If you can find a Sedra pump for $60 or less, you'd be coming out ahead.

I have a similar ES5-3 running on my 150 gal tank (48Lx24Wx30H) tank with a 40 gal sump. Skims well enough.

Their need Webern impellers are made out of a soft plastic and stop working after a month or two that has been my experience with them plus the customer service sucks. I've been running the same now defunked euro reef skimmers for almost ten years and wouldn't trade them for anything the company is now reef dynamics and it's a great skimmer .

What are webern impellers?

So you like Euroreefs? I wouldn't mind eventually upgrading to a smaller footprint & "conic" skimmer, but Euroreef does its job. =P

Can't complain if my SpaceMonsters grow from 2-3 polyps to 45+ in 6 months.

Thanks for the offer but I think I'll pass. It seems like a bit of a project and I don't need another project!! I'm already :headwallblue:

Funny"needle wheel" I was using my iPhone and it auto corrected.
Yeah I really like the Euro Reefs they are work horses. Just put up some new frag tanks at work and dusted off an old Euro Reef RS-80 and it still works great. I ordered a new pump for it. Just in case.

Found The ATB Nano you can have it for $100. It's a really good skimmer. I just upgraded to the Bubble Magnus 180

Hello,
I do not like ASM skimmers....yes they will work somewhat but so will an air stone in a plastic bottle:) To me the skimmer is one of the most important pieces to our systems so most of my budget would go to that. At 120 gallon tank you have alot of good choices for not alot of money as reefing goes....right now at Ebay under (used) skimmers you have several nice ones at a good cost that would work well for you:)

Best of Luck!

In my line of work I just hear a lot of " I should of" when talking about problems with people's tanks and how they set them up. A lot of horror stories of cutting corners on the equiptment then filling it full of expensive beautiful fish and rare corals and it crashes because of equiptment failure.
