help me decide (gigantea question)

I have another S.gigantea arriving tomorrow, and cant decide where to put it or what to swap around..

I have a tank that is set up identically to the other tanks that have successfully for a number of years. That tank houses a pair of spawning negripes .. No anemone. S. gigantea is not a natural host for negripes.

in another tank that is very similar I have a pair of faded onyx percula hosted by an H. mag. The only differences are the foot prints of the tanks, and the orientation of the surge tanks. Both mags and giganteas are natural hosts to percs.

I dont really want to move the fish but may consider..

Should I ;

1) put the new anemone in with the negripes, and hope for the un-natural pairing?

2) move the mag to the tank with the negripes and put the nw gigantea in the tank with the percs that is slightly different from my other gigantea tanks

3) swap the percs and negripes, leaving the mag where its at and putting the new gigantea in the "proven system"

Moving the anemone(s) shouldnt be hard, but I dunno how stressful.

moving the fish will likely be a PITA. I doubt that it would upset either of the spawning frequencies

Help me decide please

I would put the gigantea in the new tank. Once it get established send it to me.

Kidding aside, I would put it in the new tank. Put the Perc with it and the Nigripes to the Mag.

Hi Rod.

My nigripes have called any anemone species encountered home. In addition, they have been fairly gentle anemone residents. They restarted breeding immediately after 3 tank moves.

Based on my experience, you really have all options open with the fish. I would go with reducing the risk to the anemones as priority #1.

Best of luck.

I would chose three, i would assume it would be more difficult to swap out the nems. Also have always been a fan of the more natural setting, recreating the ocean in our homes to our best extent is the nicest thing we can do for our fish. And since the system is already proven it would be much less of a hassle if something where to go wrong with the other options, you could potentially be looking at choice 3 once again. Just my 2 cents. Btw need any help lmk would love to come check out the set up has been a long time, didn't appreciate as much then as i do now.

Both systems are extremely mature.

Actually the mag would be pretty easy to move to the negripes tank. The mag is on a single lonely rock.

I do like to keep the natural host thing going when I can,

Moving the clowns may (although doubtful) upset the spawnings of both pair if I move the fish.

Everyone seems to be advising 1, or 3, but I am leaning at #2 (3 would leave me with an un-natural thingy.

However, If I pull the mag from the percs and give to the negripes, and then the new gig doesnt do well, I would feel bad about taking the good home from the percs and leaving them with nothing..

Please keep the opinions coming.. I have a few hours before I need to decide

Could you go with option #1 until it has recovered from shipping then move to option #2, swap anemones after a couple of months? This would prevent the situation of pulling the mag from the percs and then the gig dying as you described above.

anemone arrived and appears to be in good shape. I had it floating, and started to move my mag, with intentions of putting the mag with the negripes, and the gigantea with the percs. I felt bad for the percs as I was pulling their home away from them, so decided to leave it, and hope that the negripes will like their new carpet.

Thanks for the opinions/advice

it is smaller than it appears in that pic. About 4" across. Thats the size my other purple was when I got it. This one may "open up" a bit more as it settles in.

Wow! I take it they don't have anymore. I just did a search on their site for both "anemone" and "gigantea" but didn't turn up any results. :(

Good luck with this guy. I'll have to stop and check it out!

Scott, I asked Sonny for a pic of teh mouth, and when I saw, I snatched it up. I have a great feeling about this one.. Just hope I made the right choice with which clowns to put it with.

Dave, He was going to keep me updated if anymore come in like it. Ill give you a shout if/when he does.

Rob, you were fast as it was gone in like 24 hours after being posted. It is going to look awesome when it grows out!

You have a great touch with the species, I would not bet against your success :)

Thanks for the encouragement :). For a short time a saw a mouth that wasnt as tight as I would like it, but I am OK with it being only a short time. Otherwise, it has looked great all day.. more like 6-7" instead of 4. Momma negripes is already settled in. Poppa is right around the corner keeping an eye on their eggs.

I am hoping this grows up to be a beautiful female gigantea.
