Help needed with Kalk RX....

Red Sea Purple Tang

I'm wanting to add a Kalk RX to my system and am running into a snag.

TYPE: I'm going to order one from Scott at Aquatic Systems design. This is the size I'm thinking:

Chamber capacity 3 gal
Sugg. max evap. 6 gal/day
Base diameter 8.5"
Overall height 27"
Reaction chamber height 24"
Reaction chamber dia. 6"
Mixing pump MaxiJet 600
Media capacity 0.75 lbs

PROBLEM: My ATO container is a 10g AGA tank that has RODI water coming in via a float switch. When my ATO trips, I'm estimating about a gallon of water goes into the sump at a time, thanks to a MP1200 powerhead. I realize that this is WAY to much water to be sending through a Kalk RX and into the system at one time. So I'm on to another plan. I posted a question to see if the AC3 can control a pump by the "second." If it can, my plan would be to add a very small micro-jet pump to the Kalk RX and have it run for a couple seconds at a time. This water would be dumped into the sump and not the display. My other plan would be to use a dosing pump, which I would rather not have to spend another $100+ on one of those and have it malfunction.

So...I'm wondering if someone else is running into the same issue that I have. Any thoughts or ideas are greatly appreciated!

RX= reactor right? I use a JBJ ATO with a GEO Kalk Reactor. using ModeB with one sensor, I pump around a pint at a time into my sump. You can get an ATO for around $85.00 on sale.

what I did id set up a 30 gallon poly tank with a reef filler and a pump for mixing
I mixe 2 times a day and set the reef filler to my evaporation level
Works GREAT:)

I have a small section of the sump that holds around 8 gallons of water. I use the sensor in there. The difference between the sensor in the down position and it being in the up position is somewhere between a pint and a quart. It turns the pump on for only 20 seconds or so.

I use a tom's aqua lifter pump for my top of water. Using an ATO and a Kalk reactor. I think that are rated at 10 GPH or something like that.

I use an Aquamedic SP 3000 dosing pump controlled by a Reefanatic level controller.

The SP 3000 dosing pump pushes water fast enough from my top-off resevoir (44 gallon brute can) through the Kalk Rx to keep up with the roughly 7 gallons per day evaporation, but slow enough as to not cause any spikes in pH.

IMO, use your current level controller but change the MJ1200 to a smaller paristolic dosing pump like the SP 3000. The Aqua Lifter is another option here.

This is my current 10g ATO set-up. So with the Aqua Lifter Pump, I would remove the MP1200 powerhead from the tank. Put the Aqua Lifter between the 10g and the Kalk RX. So the Aqua Lifter would suck the water from the 10g tank and flow would then go through the Kalk RX and into the sump.

That is a clean looking setup :) I have a 24 gallon Rubbermaid container that I use and it looks, well, not so nice.

Who pays attention to dates? Maybe it's still useful for him after 5 years...

It very well could be.

I was just pointing it out for those that didn't realize.

There were a bunch of names that you don't see around anymore so I checked the date wondering what spurred them to post all of the sudden.

I do the exact same thing and it's worked great for years. Ca++ 420 with no other supplementation.
