Help please!... Zoas and flow.

I am planning a 20"x 20" x 20" cube which will hold zoanthids and a few ricordia florida.
To provide the flow i was thinking of using two of the new Tunze Nanostreams when they eventually come out over here in the U.K.
I would use 2 x 6025 which each run at 2500 litres per hour but i was just wondering if there would be any problems with the amount of flow, would this amount of flow make the zoanthids close or will it be o.k.
One other option could be to use the Nanostream 6055 which runs on a controller and can pump a variable flow of 1000 l/h upto 5,500 l/h, but these are more expensive and i would only be able to afford just one, and i am not sure if i want one pump flowing in one direction even if it has the ability to surge, creating a variable flow,

any help or advice would be gratefully appreciated,

Well, flow is always a huge part of keeping your animals healthy.

I believe that with the 6025 Tunzes you should be able to get optimal flow. The more expensive tunze would create a more desirable effect on the animals and if I could afford it, I would consider the more expensive ones first. Otherwise, if you spend $500 for two pumps now and realize down the road that you wanted the others, then you'll just end up paying double what you initially invested. Even if you sell the others, you'll never get full price.

Again, it all depends on what you can afford. If you can, do it right the first time.

zoaths doesn't like strong flow..so some regular powerhead will work..

zoas love tunze's, and they can take some pretty strong flow; i have some 3 ft. from a 6200 and they are growing like crazy.

Yeah they tolarate a good amount of indirect flow. I Have the 7095 multi controller for the tunze. I have them running at about 40% and pulsing every few seconds.

Sounds like a lot of flow for a 20" cube. I think you'd do just fine with less, but if you don't care about saving $$....

I would say that no matter what you use, caution is the word when it comes to directing your powerhead. You can take the cheapest PH with a very low flow and not direct the flow properly and that alone will cause your zoas to retract. Improperly placed PH's will also disturb the substrate and possibly knock rocks and/or top heavy coral over or off the reef.

I have never used the PH you are considering, I think your aquascaping also will dictate just how much flow you will require. Whatever you choose, enought flow to gently wiggle the polyps is enough. Too much is obvious as retraction will occur. Do you plan to use a wavemaking device for variable/alternating current?

I would also consult the retailer you will purchase your PH's from as well as asking around to see if anyone else with a similar size tank has used what you are contemplating.

Thanks for the detailed reply, i have decided against the stronger Tunze streams and will instead use the two nanostreams (non adjustable), i will take your advice and be very careful as to how i direct the flow etc.

streams have such a wide and dispersed flow that you can aim them at zoas a foot away and they will be fine.
