I've found out that if you drastically reduce the nutrients in your tank, they stop growing. They need phosphates and nitrates to grow.

You can trim them and then reduce the nutrients.

Or get a Saddleback Butterflyfish, it will eat them and everything else, haha.

My purple pulsing xenia is all gone, and its trying to eat my pink ones now.

My Saddleback will try to eat anything in my tank, it also trained my damsel to nip at the Xenia also. They both make funny faces when they start to nip at them. It cannot taste good to them, lol.

But it doesn't stop them, from trying.

Ill take some of the leather! Heck and the xenia! I have a large tank at work I need to fill with corals and i know patients would love the movement.

Trim the leather

How do you trim the leather? Just cut it and where at the bass of the branching stock?

In my tank I use a pair of tweezers to pull the xenia out , go all the way down to the root of it and make a clean pull out

Is there any other way I have a 120 with a tall stand so I need to step stool just to reach the bottom so tweezers might be difficult.

U can cut it any where. Use a new clean razor blade. Heck u could even cut it in half and wait till it heals and sell or trade the other half. Leathers are not worth much but u may get some one that wants it.

U r in for it now. Normally u need to keep them on a seep rat rock island not touching any walls so u can control then. They grow like a weed for sure. If u can remove the rocks they r on then manually pluck them off.

I have a display refugium with xenia and green star polyps. I let them grow like crazy in there and they help filter the water for my display tank. My non-display refugium with macroalgae is slowly dying away!

Asmodyus, are those the purple or the whitish xenia? I remove mine via a razor blade as close to the base as I can, then smother it with something..

forextrader, how big is your display refugium? I am interested in trying something like that.

I just use a 30 gallon for the xenia and green star polyps. There are lots of rubble rocks in there which makes it easy to sell frags. Also, there are a couple of clown fish, a couple of neon gobies, a yellow assessor, and of course the clean up crew.

The non-display refugium had red gracilaria in it. When I started the display refugium all my macroalgae withered away. Maybe I should stop skimming?
