Help Purple Anthais wont eat

Do you know which purple anthais? Hopefully not Queen, Princess,or Evans these are very difficult to keep where as the Bartlets are rather hardy .more info is needed .Did they come from LFS? Were they eating at the store?

Unfortunatly, this fish, if it is a purple queen, has been showing up in LFSs lately for less than $20.
It is a deep water fish and doesn't like much light.
It is known to be hard to get to eat and frequently starves to death in home aquaria.
I have Ignitus, lyretail and a truncatus Anthias that are easy to keep and like the light.
I have been tempted to get some purple queens but have resisted.

Like ecr111, I too have been tempted to get a few purple queens, because they are very pretty and very cheap. I have likewise resisted, though, because there are lots of threads I have seen in which good, experienced aquarists have flat out not been able to entice these fish to eat. Hope you have better luck.

As stated above, if they are purple queens, then it is very unlikely they will eat in captivity. They will almost certainly perish.

Try getting something alive to entice them to start feeding.. Like live brine or even live mosquitolarvae or something.

I have had these (Tuka's) for 2 years now and after starting them on live mosquitolarvae (Bloodworms i think they are called in US) they now eat everything i put in the tank.

But i also agree with the others these are fish that are hard to get to survive any lenght of time. I have gotten very nice examples and have had some luck i think.

You should hatch some live baby brine -- they usually eat that, but will have to be weaned off.

These fish are difficult even for the most dedicated expert. Please complain to your LFS -- it is irresponsible of them to sell these to you. Bjarne above is one of the handful of people having any longterm success with them.

I am no expert and I have never kept these fish, just as a warning. I do remember reading somewhere that if you are going to have any success with these fish, you need an activily producing refugium teeming with copepods, ect. This provides a steady source of live food to you inhabitants, very much like they would experience in the wild. Also, if you have a protein skimmer hooked up after your refugium, it will just pull out all the little "bugs" in the foam. Also, if you don't have time to set-up a refugium, Saltwaterfish.com sells a bag of live copepods, which would either help jump-start your refugium or just provide some live food. Best of luck!
