not today it looks like this

my water conditions are

PH 8.2
amonia 0
nitrite 0
and nitrate 0

salinit is a 1.025

i haven't touched it at all since i got it, and it seems to have another section in the middle growing out.... i don't know if it was there or not when i bought it.......

any ideas what might be happening....... all my other corals are out.....

Are you talking about that section at the top in the middle? That looks like a dead section to me.

Euphyllia can be tricky corals... sometimes they're really easy, sometimes they die for no apparent reason. It looks like maybe it has brown jelly disease, which if I remember correctly is an infection that can result after a tear/damage to the flesh. There is quite a bit of flesh recession on the skeleton.... try searching for brown jelly disease on these forums.

How long have you had it? It could just be a bit too much flow? If it doesn't extend like a monster under little/no flow then you know you've really got a problem.

I agree--but I don't see the evidence of the brown jelly disease--but I do notice die off at the ends.

How long have you had this coral in your tank and has it always been in that spot.

I do see some evidence of cyano very close by which indicates a possible build up of nitrates and phosphates in that area.

I would move it up a little farther from that area--as long as it is not a heavy or direct flow area.

i've had it for a week, and it just started to do it least night....

so basically ur saying the hole coral looks like it's infected? i ran a search and there really wasn't that much information that came up. it there anything i can do?

i had a phosphate and nitrate out break about 3 months ago, which reulted in that.....

my water has been pretty stable for the past 3 months though.... with nitrates at 0

i don't have a test for calcium, only alk

gimme a sec and ill get the readings......

BTW, i pulled it out of that spot and raised it about 3 inchs and now it's vertical instead of horizontal

my alk is 1.8

1.8 as in meq/l? If this is correct that is really, really low. Safe range is 2.5-4.0 meq/l or 7-11 dkh. Are you sure your testkit is accurate?

Can't' imagine it would be correct judging by the looks of your other corals. Seems like they are OK, right? Look healthy to me.

1.8 meq/l

and all the other corals are fine... my hairy mushrooms are out twice as much as yesterday, my pearl bubble is a li bigger.......

also, my tank is only about 7 months old.... closer to 8 now. I've been adding coral frags with the occasional 3-5 inch coral about 2x a month since right before Christmas

i'm going to retake my alk test....

Ok, yeah a re-test would be good. What test kits are you using? It's only been in there for a day so if your params are checking out to be OK it's probably just an acclimation thing. It will take a bit for the coral to get comfortable with it's new home.

I would start checking on alk and ca frequently now that you are getting into slightly higher demanding corals. Getting on a supplementation regiment would be advisable. ;)

pH is fine. The alk is still really low though. Are you dosing anything currently to deal with alkalinity and calcium demand?

:) Yeah we all have to at some point. Especially when you get into Calcium demanding corals like lps and sps. What product do you use to supplement?

kent marine calcium and coral vite

:update on hammer: 4/5 of the coral came out since i moved it... whats now the bottom and what used to be the right hand side while viewing is still retracted......

i'll post pics soon, just wanna give it another half hour or so... great way to spend a sunday, doing laundry and playing doctor.... rather be out with the top down enjoying the sun

Ok so it looks like you aren't on a "balanced" alk/ca regiment yet. An easy, cheap, solution is to use a DIY 2-part to keep your alkalinity and calcium up and in balance. Balanced levels are key. Here's two great article from the link above to reference.

How to Select a Calcium and Alkalinity Supplementation Scheme

You can get on a alk/ca plan easily from Bulk Reef Supply. They have everything you need to get started. Over the long run you will save lots of $$ using a DIY method rather than the brand name stuff. The idea is to boost your alkalinity with baking soda and use calcium chloride for your Ca.

Always use this calculator and test frequently when dosing any of these products in your tank. ;)
