People have the chinese fxtures and are growing mixed reefs fine. Theres a thread with 100+ pages about chinese fixtures. I don't think its wise to go with the maxspect.

Also, the maxspect is not gonna be able to light the whole tank. You will need another one

Thanks for input.....but trying to find out about the mxpect
Compared to the chinese leds..is it worth me selling the
Chinese leds to get a good deal on the maxpect.or should I
Just stick with what I have.upgrading to the maxspect will cost
Me another 200. I already have the others since last year.but
Did not have a chance to use them....

Definitely correct on this one. I have the 27" 16K Razor on my 29G and works perfectly. No dark areas what so ever. I would imagine that you would need 2 to sufficently light your tank and you will probably have to suspend them higher than the tank mounts do.

Personally I love my Razor but @ $500 a pop, it may not be the most economical lighting solution for larger tanks.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

This is what a 27" razor looks like on a 29G

Why spend the money if you dont have to? I had the same chinese lights as you for a couple of years and everything grew fine. With the way Leds are changing on a daily basis I'm sure there will be a new Maxpect razor with full spectrum coming out eventually and then you'll want to upgrade again. As the others said, unless you want shadows on the sides you will need more then one.

I really, really, really depends on which brand of 'Chinese' led fixture you have and what colors of leds are in it and if it has a controller or dimmers? If it an old ToaTronics or SunSun (even new), sell them for whatever you can get. It shouldn't be too much (sorry). But if they are EverGrow, or ReefBreeders and have multiply color leds and built-in controllers, use them and skip the Maxspect.

Without knowing what you have already, any opinions you get are close to worthless IMHO.

I am thinking about getting a Razor for my 29 Gallon.

But I do not like the look of it that High.

Can you lower it to be like 1" over the Aquarium or is that not possible?

I do not want Light Spillage all over the Room like my Kessil gives me either.

I want all the light in the aquarium like i have with my T5's.

Tom, if it's only blue and white and has no dimmers, it's older and probably (almost 100% sure) it's only one shade of blue and one shade of white and you won't be happy with it unless it's a FOWLR tank. Newer fixtures just using blue & white where using 2 and 3 different blues and whites which were better. About the same time dimmers came into the picture (and they are way, way, WAY better than a fixture with out dimmers). Then more colors started to get added and those are even better.

I have one just like yours. I used it for a while over my anemone tank, until about 12-14 months ago. Then I got a deal on a used MH/t5 and it was way better. Then in Dec 2012 I got an EverGrow IT2040 and it's great! I moved the old Chinese fixture (mine was TaoTronics) to my refugium. I pulled it from there for a newer unit about 4 months ago. I'm trying to sell mine and will consider myself lucky if I get $50 for it!

Good luck... you'll probably need it. And after you decide you can't keep corals with it, don't think that's true of all led fixtures... yous is just from back when people were just learning what our corals wanted from leds. They want full spectrum colors and dimmers (as a minimum) or built-in controllers. Use them to light your refugium or your sump under your stand, not your DT!

I am not impressed by the razers.. I agree with the evergrow leds.. Many tanks with success can be found with those full spectrum leds

The only way to get the light 1" over the aquarium with the stock parts would be to suspend it from the ceiling.

The closer it is to the tank, the less light coverage you will get in the tank.

I understand what you mean though. The thing really lights up my room.

I can rest it on my canopy or just slightly higher, if you want to see if it would help and what it would look like.

After having the LEDs I have now, I wouldn't buy any other brand for any reason. But if your going to buy another fixture, save yourself the headache and buy a 48" Photon. Better controlability and color than Razors, and a better light IMHO. Maxspect makes an ok light, buy missed the mark in a lot of ways.... Photon is the way to go on a budget, period
