Help with new Pictilis Anthias

Hey guys, I recently got an pictilis anthias (painted goldie). She has been in qt at lfs for 6 weeks (Lfs is two blocks down my home so I visited daily, she didn't show any symptoms but we performed prazipore just in case).

This Monday I finally take her home and put her into my observation/conditioning tank, she will stay there for another 6 weeks and if everything goes well, she will go to DT. She is about 4.5-5 inches and I think transition into male is close because male coloration pattern started to show up. She ,or eventually he, will be single as advised by lfs since the large size and potential aggression of the fish makes it hard to maintain a harem.

About feeding, I have tired several types of food. The only types she accepts are frozen brine and mysis. She seems to be interested in pellet and flake foods but doesn't eat those. She also does attack PE callunus but spits it afterwards. Lfs feeder her live mysis and brine so she might be a little spoiled at this point. I know I should be grateful she is at least eating frozen mysis but what are your experience with these fish. Will they eventually accept pellet/flake food? Also is a steady diet exclusively on mysis healthy enough for a fish? I can throw in some brine (hikari spirulina and selcon soaked) but those are more like treats for fish than actual nutrition. I would also appreciate input about this specie from people who are experienced with.

Thanks snorvich, I tried to find some to buy but it seems out of stock everywhere :/. I have some Doc's Eco Super Eggs and I tried those. She grabbed some but spit them out, she might have sucked the yolk and spit out the shells as the eggs looked a bit squeezed afterwards. I also managed to get her eat some dried mysis shrimp which is a good direction towards pellet foods. I also ordered some Reef Nutrition Arcti-Pods as she seem to prefer larger meaty food compared to planktonic ones.

Frozen mysis and spirulina brine are excellent foods 100% of the time.
You can mix in small pellets and flakes while the cubes are thawing so that they absorb the scent--dont rinse cubes, let the pellets and flakes become saturated w/ the juice. After a couple of months the anthias will be eating anything you serve.

I have kept pictilis on a few occasions and individuals that took pellets or flake were the exception. Not an easy anthias.

If there is an asian market nearby, I would try to find frozen capelin and take out the eggs and feed the eggs.

This should get them used to feeding on non-moving / non-live foods.

If it's eating frozen that is great. I mix up my own frozen that contains various things. Pellets are definitely in the mix. After a few months they may pick up the pellets. Soak pellets in the mysis/brine juice before feeding. Be patient and feed enough frozen while you try to transition it.

tkeracer619, Yeah feeding enough is my main concern right now. She is getting mysis shrimp 3 times per day. One usual aspect is she is preferring the really large pieces of mysis. I am giving her PE mysis and as you might know, PE contains some really really large shrimps. She generally ignores smaller mysis and if I mix mysis with brine shrimp, she only targets mysis. This makes me think pellet food might be smaller than the usual food size this fish prefers. I will start mixing some flake and pellet food to my mysis mix, I hope over time she recognizes them as food. She already accept freeze dried mysis soked in water, so I am lucky ;).

Good advice! Difficult fish require a little extra effort.

Hey guys, a quick update; She also eats frozen shrimp (raw shrimp for human consumption) grated into medium sized pieces. I will look for fish eggs next time I am at the supermarket.
