Help! Zoas closed???

Im confused about what target to shoot for in Alk/dkh. The "normal" ranges are as follows acording to resorses:
DKH:
8-10 dkh (capn_hylinur)
7-8 (natural sea water, salifert test kit)
7-11 (Advanced aquarists online mag.)
My alk. is 8.6 is it high or with in normal limits?

I saw your new testing results after I posted the long reply which was aimed for eliminating ammonia and NO2 in the cycling tank. Your results show zero ammonia and NO2 so the mini cycle isn't anything worth worrying about. But the things you ordered are good to have anyway.

Forget about the kalkwasser dosing part since your water has no NH3 & NO2. Just slowly bring up your CA and mag and you'll be fine.

I would say 80-90% of the reefers keep their alk between 8-10. 8.6 is where mine has been and I think it's perfectly fine. The composition of ca and mag in NSW is about ca : mag = 1 : 3.

You can replace 2 part with kalkwasser once your parameters are fixed cause it's more economical and adds the right proportion of alk and calcium at the same time. The 2 part can be used to fine tune ca or KH.

So why do you think some of my zoas are still not open and are melting? Also would it benifit my tank to dose it with the cycle bacteria when I get it? Will it survive shipping in Florida? I guess they pack it in dry ice. By the way what do you do to get rid of algae? Do you use any products to remove phospates?

zoas close for numerous reasons and sometimes they do so just because they can. Melting could result from poor water quality, fungus, pests...etc.

Yes, it will be benificial to dose DIGEST regularly. It claims to help rid algae but it works by depleting dissolved nutrients in the water rather than killing algae directly. So it takes time and sometimes too many other variables prohibit the desired results. I use GFO in a phosphate reactor and it works wonder for me.

I have dosed ca and mg severl times and #'s dont seem to go up. About watching ph does dosing ca and mg make it go up? What would you do if it started climbing? Do most tanks need to have a phos. reactor or some kinda phos to be sucessful or is it just some tanks?

I am not familiar with B-ionic two parts but epsom salt has mag sulfate which will lower PH I believe. As long as your PH is below 8.5, I wouldn't worry too much about it.
How much have you dosed compared to the recommended total amount? It takes a lot of mag additive to raise mag level.
Phosphate reactor isn't a must but it definitely makes algae control a lot easier.

Ok today I got tired of playing I doses 5 cups of Mag. Randy 2 part my friend gave me. And 3 oz of cal. Im considering dosing vit. C tonight. What do yall think of that?

I think it would be best for you to buy a two little fishies phosphate media reactor a small power head pump and a 150g jar of Rowaphos. Hook it up and let er rip. Removing the PO4 will go a long ways for you and get your the results you are after.

Also, take a little while and read up on the whole calcium, alkalinity, magnesium thing. It is pretty easy to understand once you read it and study it a bit. It really helps to balance your tank and know what exactly is going on.

Thanks NaH20freak! I will look into doing that. I hope with in the next week or so I will have everything balanced as it should be. My husband is from OR;) Whats the best artical to read on Cal., Mag., and Alk.?
