It's probably best to buy a smaller true perc. But if it just died soon and not longer than 2-3 weeks then find a perc that is way larger than the male.
The first part is correct. Any small, juvenile fish should be accepted by the female, and the new fish should turn into a male given time. Introducing a second large fish could be putting two females together, and that would never be good.
