Herbtana and Saltwater Ich X

I have heard that these are reef safe ich treatments, but can't find reviews on them anywhere. If anyone has used them, any feedback would be great.
Thanks.

I wasted a lot of precious time using Herbtana for 12 days. It did not work. In case you were wondering, I also tried Ich Attack, No Ich and they did not work either.
Sorry for the bad news but that was my experience.

I tried Herbtana, and it worked well enough. The fish that were really sick died, however the rest lived. I could see a daily improvement while using it. Fish started eating, the ich diminished, and after about 2 weeks everything was back to normal. Did a massive waterchange, fired up the skimmer, and everything was right on point. Also, the treatment did no harm to any corals or inverts whatsoever.

After going thru that experience, I now QT everything before I add to DT. It's terrible to watch that happen to your fish.

An effective treatment against a parasite also kills inverts - that is why there is no such thing as a reef safe treatment.

While I can't prove it, I believe that when Crypt subsides in a tank using a "Reef Safe" treatment, it's due to the fish's immune system and not the herb based concoction that is being dosed daily.

Save yourself the headache and QT properly...once the parasite is actually eradicated from your DT, there isn't a stressor in the world that will make it come back, so no matter how cold or hot the water gets or how much a fish gets harassed by a damsel, it will not get crypt simply because it's not in there.

Man, how good it is to hear that. I'm having a strange situation with my fish. They started scratching and I've just ordered a bottle of Herbtana, and I've read mixed reviews, most of them positive. I hope I have the same success!

There is no reef-safe treatment for Cryptocaryon. Recommend reading the stickies at the top of this forum for effective treatment methods and other information about this parasite.

+1 but realistically some folks need to find out for themselves

Ich x breaks down in the water after 4-5 days per the label... So it clearly does nothing. As for the other don't you that zoos and research institutions have already tried this and clearly didn't work either? Out of ever disease book I have ever read or own it never once mentions either one of these products

I would say - as a rule of thumb - you can assume that if it is reef safe it is ineffective against any kind of parasite.

The only exception for this rule could be very specific antibiotics or if someone comes up with a "bio weapon" type medication that only targets organisms with a specific gene sequence. Though I somewhat doubt that the latter is something you can expect to find in stores anytime soon. But wouldn't it be nice if someone would start working on it?

All the rumors that these herbal or reef safe treatments work come likely from the fact that the fish develop some immunity against the parasite and get a handle on the infection by themselves. I had that plenty of times.
So it would have gone "away" by itself with or without the reef safe medication.

Of course the parasite doesn't just go away but will rather be present at a low level, ready to strike again if a new "untrained" fish is added or the overall health of the apparently immune fish is weakened.

I know that paraguard is for the most part reefsafe and it also does nothing for ich. I have used it successfully to treat flukes

Used herbtana a few years back and seemed to work for me. New additions since the treatment and no concerns. Just my experience.

Or your fish got over the infection by themselves - it happens all the time. If people tried something like garlic or herbal remedies at the same time they usually claim it worked, while most likely doing nothing would have yielded the same result.
