Hippo or Yellow tang for my 90? Opinions please

Well thanks for the opinions...and the entertainment ;) I think I've made up my mind that if I do in fact add a tang it will be the yellow. If I decide not to go with surgeonfish, I will probably go with 2 or 3 Anthias.

Decisions decisions...Fun decisions though :D

There's nothing wrong with a few anthias! A few anthias can be just as cool as a tang. :fish1: And as colorful!

If this will be your first tang go with the yellow. They seem to be relatively hardy and disease resistant. When you feel confident you might want to try adding a small (less than 4 in) hypo or powder blue.

2006, referring to those who practice proper husbandry in a derisive fashion does nothing to advance your particular point of view. If you wish to advocate for liberal stocking practices, by all means provide real-world experiences documenting success at same.

Just my 2 cents. Yellow Tangs are one of the best all around reef fish I have had combining hardiness/ beauty/reef compatability/and temperment towards other fish. I had one in a 90 gal for about 7 years, gave him to a relative because I moved and fish is still alive and happy. I would have no problem putting another one in a 90 gal. because in my experience with Marine fish in general it's more about not crowding the tank with two many fish and or inverts, than it is about sheer size or gallonage of tank. The hardest thing to do for most people is to NOT get that extra fish to many. Make a yellow tang your prize showpiece of your 90, with the other fish choices smaller and few and he will be a happy tang.

My post is not derisive and I do not advocate liberal stocking practices. If you are referring to my signature it is meant to humor aquarist that don't buy the rational that keeping a 3" fish in a four foot tank is wrong but keeping a 6" fish in a six foot tank is proper husbandry. If my signature is against forum rules I will change it.

The yellow should be great for the 90. Although tampa thinks it is a bad idea, i am having great results. Mine has been in there for only 4 weeks now but i had him in a 29(dont freak!) for about 4 weeks before i had the 90 set up. He is doing great and is around 3 inches. I will never regret putting him in the 90, i think he will do great. I also have a little less than 50lbs of live rock, so he has a great deal of swimming space. If your considering between the blue and the yellow, go with the yellow for sure. The kole is also another choice, but IMO they are a bit drab and i think the yellows are just so much more personable.

4 weeks isn't long enough to say you have great results. You can't say you will 'never regret putting him in the 90' because you don't know what the future holds. You think it will do great based on what? I didn't even realize a 90 could have 'a great deal of swimming space'. Yours may just be doing well this moment because it's glad to be out of the 29... ;)

Obviosly its not long enough tampa! but numerous people have had success and ive been to numerous LFS who have housed yellows in 90s for more than 4 weeks, actually years and still living! No fish is going to not feel cramped unless your system is super large. But there are more people that would agree with me that it is fine, than people who would agree with you that it is not ok. For people that have smaller reefs such as a 90, a yellow i believe is a perfect tank mate.

And it works for most people, so stop spamming threads about your tang nonsense when it is working for people. I hate to get all defensive like this but its working and i hate when people say it cannot work when it is!

You mean in the whole 3 weeks or so you have been a member? Or do you have another username?

OH Man that is funny!

BTW 4 weeks in a 29 is not a major issue as long as it is the quarantine process.

I am blown away at how much people argue this point. No one truly "knows" how much space each fish truly needs. It is an educated guess. I can tell you this, regardless of the type of fish, the more space you can give them the better. At the end of the day, people either care for there animals or they dont. Animal abuse and neglect reaches much farther than just dogs and cats, however sometimes as saltwater hobbyist we refuse to acknowledge it. Tangs are an animal, they enjoy swimming in the ocean, why not give them a large home?:twitch:

Please define 'works' and 'working'. I will try to stop spamming threads with my 'tang nonsense'. God I hate when I do that!

Hah Tampa I do not want to bicker back and forth with you. Most likely you wont ever agree with me and neither me to you. So lets just leave it there, I am on this forum to learn and interact and not to fight with others about tangs and tank size lol. So ill just leave it there. Happy reefing
