And have you thought about adding 60-80lbs of base rock and letting your current live rock seed the tank?

Hey Hop, so are you saying just buy something like what reeferrocks . com sells?

or this stuff?

caribsea base rock

Thanks!

minor update

just thought I'd post some more pics with the salt in, so you can see how clear the water is:

Side view, as before just using temporary 30" 55K Compact PC to light this for effect. Real light may go up this weekend.

From the back with the black plexiglass removed to see the room. Some of this is reflection from the lighing behind (holding tank) and some of it is that damned scum I can't get completely off! :D

Here's a pic of one of two wavemaker dealies I bought, pretty cheap option and they seem to work well. Sorry for the bubbles on them :)

Finally, the refugium outputs were really loud, so I took two PVC caps, drilled a couple of large holes in them and voila! the tank is pretty quiet for 3600 GPH flowing thru it! Also, less salt spray! which is key, I hate that!

comments welcome! :bum:

I think it looks really good. One thing about those flow rotators is that they can severely cut back the flow(gph). It might not matter in your case though.

nice job.... How long did it take you?

Thanks RELAD...You don't really want to know ;)

The project started last January as we had hired a contractor to finish our "unfinished basement". The plans was for a media room (projector w/110" screen :D ), a wet bar, full bathroom and an additional multi purpose room with the tank built in, which I plan on putting a modern, yet simple corner desk there so I can work and view the tank as well.

I worked with my contractor on the specs for the 180G tank. I ordered the tank from my LFS and once the tank arrived, my contractor built the stand and electrical work as well as all the finishing to make the outside look pretty.

The tank sat dormant for many months over the summer and fall, I just had no time for it and I was getting frustrated on performing the plumbing work as well. I did buy some stuff and put it together though.

I finally found the time over the Xmas break, finished the plumbing and putting water in, etc. If you take out all my procrastination, it didn't take that long. ;)

thanks!

yep, they do cut the flow, since I have them on a "Y" type dual loc-line, the other side is just more powerful. Which is ok, because the outside outputs are so much closer to the glass, they tended to have too much flow and push the sand around in the corners. This seems to even things out better.

Reeferrocks is gone, but I do like those barebones rocks on that site. I didn't look at the price, but I did bookmark it for when I need some more base rock:) Always good to have an extra 100 lbs or so sitting around for that 75 gallon nano, frag mounting or whatever:)

some online dealers sell the "reef rock" ones on the bottom, it's about $44 for 50lbs of rock...not bad 0.88/lb is better than $5-6/lb :D although the benefits are less, unless you are willing to wait, which I am...

IMO, there is not much benefit in getting all liverocks. I'd get may be 3/4 base rocks and 1/4 cured liverocks. The base rocks will be seeded in no time, especially during the startup period where there is no fish.

For the current tank that I am setting up, I bought some liverocks from a local reefer, which has long been cycled, not to mention the bargain. With the addition of liverocks from my old tank, my new tank has 0 ammonia from the start. If I were to set up a new tank in the future, I'd go the same path again.

Come on, you need to hurry, can't wait to see more. :D FWIW, my tank arrived 24 Dec 2006 and now I am already waiting for fish. Hope this will give you some nudge. :D

thanks drummer for the tip...I went ahead and ordered the 50lb box of Caribsea reef rock to start, combine that with the 40 lbs of LR I have and buy another 40-50lbs from my LFS to supplement.

Navy, you are probably right, you likley just miss out on the "extras" that come with LR (some bad, some good).

LOL! on the hurry-up..I'm trying, but a big procrastinator by nature :D Although, when I do hurry, I tend to muck things up, so it's likley better that way....

I'll check out your link...

I'm not done with the aqascaping, plus I plan to add 40-90lbs of live rock. This was first attempt ;)

UPDATES II

I also had some slight leaks around the sump and fuge and even the intake for the pump. So last weekend, I drained the sump to the bone, and retightened all the bulkheads and for good measure, used silicone as well.

Also, the outputs from the fuge to the sump was simply connected with no glue and I thought there might be some water sliping thru, but I couldn't see anything. So I glued some extended PVC so it is more over the sump and reattached the output pipes.

DSCN0120.jpg

due to the water going further, the tank level in the fuge is a bit higher as it takes longer for the water to get into the sump.

I also put a cuple pieces of LR in the Fuge and put my power compact PC light on top, running it for about 12 hour a day now.
