HOB Only Tanks

I still get some DOC's on the surface. My HOB filter keeps most of the surface agitated, but there is one area near the back left corner that sometimes gets a bit of a film. A paper towel run across the area picks up the film.

Nice Kellie! How does that damsel behave?

I also have an HOB tank. As usual during my late night rock moving antics go, I fragged two of my caulestreas by accident. This picture is probably at least 6 to 8 months old. I've moved things around and the RBTA has split.

Nice tank Sugar! I have two of those damsels, they were sold as "Kapung" damsels. They are sweathearts. I never would have bought them if I had not trusted the guy that they are peaceful and they are! I think they might be a pair, they are starting to show some pairing up behavior.

For surface scum all joking aside I just take a cup and submerge it so I am skimming the top. I think I'll try the paper towel trick tonight on my 29.

Oh facebook, how you make a great free image host.

SIDENOTE:

This was my tank before my heater crashed, I lost quite a bit and now have WAY more xenia, maybe some more pics later.

well he died in the heater crash but well over a year, I fed phyto and cyclopeez.... I guess that and some dirty water was all it ever needed.

my latest one has been going for three months and shows no signs of slowing down.

Here's my 39 gallon bowfront with an HOB Emperor 400. That toadstool is about 12 years old. As you can see, he got quite a haircut.

WOW! that looks great

I'm glad you started this because I'm in the process of gathering information now for a HOB tank. There are a lot of very nice tanks in this thread. This is very encouraging.

I want to play! Some very nice examples of what can be done without a sump. Here is my 40 breeder that has all HOB equipment, been running for about 13-14 months.

Currently running a 60 gallon FOWLR with no sump or HOB. Looking to add a HOB but only left myself with 2.5 inches behind the tank (doh!). Any trick on how to move the tank forward another inch and a half so I can slide a HOB behind it? It's on a carpeted floor. How much water can be drained safely in an attempt to move forward?

I was in the same situation as you when I upgraded my cpr backpack to the octopus BH-2000 and needed more clearance behind the tank. I drained around 20-25 gallons of water from the tank (live rock and all) and slowly and carefully inched the tank forward (carpeted tank also). It wasn't too difficult and only required myself. The tank was also a 60 gallon, 4 footer

The tank is 60 gallons and the one I had to move forward to make room for the skimmer. The powerheads are two koralia 1's (around 400 gph each i think) on each side and two koraila nanos (200 some odd gph) on the back glass panel and side. Im in the process of redoing the entire tank to feature a few haddonis and a clownfish pair.
