I found some sea shells at hobby lobby that look cool and are the right size for my hermits to move into. how do i tell if they are reefsafe? They don't look like they have been coated or anything. They may have been buffed or polished though. It's from U.S. Shell (shells worldwide)Los fresnon Tx

should be ok. I think they use bleach to bleach old coral skeletons. But shells im not sure. If you suspect somthing soak them in freshwater for a week before adding them to the tank to remove any residuals.

not sure what they're charging, but likely a cheaper solution is to go by a craft store, such as Michael's, Waccammaw, etc. In the craft section you'll find small net bags of sea shells in a variety of types and sizes. Some will be dyed colors - you can set those aside. But the natural colored ones are fine - not bleached, just cleaned and dried. I've usually found 18 to 2 doz. usable shells for around $2.50.
