Sea Shells

Hi everyone. I'm not sure if this is the correct forum for this question, but here it is: Can I use old sea shells from a thrift store in a marine aquarium (for hermit crabs, hiding places, ect.)? The shells aren't painted or anything, and they all look clean (planning on thoroughly washing them just in case). Thanks for any help with this
