Hole size Questions???

I think Chad must be on vacation. I AM JUST SOOOO EXCITED! Steve finished the stand which is beautiful and it sits beside my 65g DT & stand.
1. So I'm ready to outfit my Display fuge. (all equipment in sump) Will have 4" water intake chamber, 2 baffles (under then over) 3" apart, fuge chamber, then another baffle(?) to keep chaeto from draining back into DT & lessen water flow into DT incase of power outage? Does that sound about right?

This will be my set-up. 65gDT w/ U-tube overflowing into 29g equipment sump; 1262 Eheim (900gph) pumping water up 5' into 30g fuge; water gravity flowing from fuge back into DT. So I figure about 115-120 combined gallons.
2. Don't know how to figure head loss, so don't know how many gph will be going thru fuge?
3. Need to know what size hole to drill in fuge to accomadate whatever that water flow is?
4. Also where to drill hole - how far from top & side.
5. I had actually wanted to use clear flexible tubing instead of PVC, but largest I found is 1"ID.
4. Currently have old EboJager 200w heater - what watt. for additional heater and what brand?

First there is a head loss calculator on the home page to figure out. Second use the overflow calculator on the home page. Third I would at least get 1 more 200W heater or 2 new 200W heaters, used heaters always make me nervous.
 
The head loss calculater is hard to understand since the site upgrade (you can't scroll up or down) but if you hold the "ctrl" button while pushing the "-" (minus) button will make the screen shrink and you can view it all.

As far as where to drill the hole, I don't know what tank you want to drill? the fuge (which is above the DT????)

OK this is my set up. Steve left doors off until we get plumbed. Yes, I want to drill the fuge (above the DT) OK I went to calculators, and it didn't have a 1262 listed, so I used Mag 9 which is probably close - it said pumping up 5' I'd end up w/about 788gph. And it said 1.17" but I'll drill a 1 1/2" hole, which is what Chad recommended. But it said min.12" linear - and I don't know what that means.
I would like to have some plumbing suggestions - also baffles needed in sump & fuge. Thanks.

Oh gotcha, I think that where you have the fuge it's gonna need a low flow unless you have a lot bigger bulkhead or raise the tank to have that 12" minimum linear flow, the way it is now the fuge will overflow with that much water movement.
as far as baffles I would suggest surfing melevsreef.com he has many different configuration on how to set up a sump.
 
What does "12' min.linear" mean? Is it the distance from the hole to the outlet? What if the hole is on the right side of the tank w/90 elbow and basically 37" linear run into DT?

I was confused on "12 min.linear" meant. So i googled it, got to love google. Turns out that it is the size of the overflow box, ie if you where to build an overflow box all three sides of the over flow must add up to 12", and it has nothing to do with the size of the pipe.
 
No I wouldn't worry about the min distance of the pipe, just make sure the actual flow rate, ie you have taken into account if you are splitting the return between the tank and the refugium.
 
I know this may sound like a stupid question, but does the hole I drill into the fuge to gravity feed back to the DT need to b e completely under the water level, and if so, by how much?
 
Well it depends. There are many different designs. I have used one where I had a hole in the bottom of the tank and pipe that ran up to the top to skim the service of the water. I have also had one where there was a hole in the side with one of those plastic pre-filters. The water would get to about half of the hole and skim over/down to the next tank.
 
I would cut the hole as close to the top as possible. There might be less water leaking in case of problems.

You won't have near the head loss with the Eheim 1262 than if you were using a Mag. The 1262 is a much better pump. Just as info
