Hopeful new member to the crew!

Kharn

MANTISMAN
G'day all

The reason why I say 'hopeful' is because I do NOT have this stomatopod within my possession rite now (soon though) down payment has been made on the critter (in order to seal the deal) but I have asked them to temporarily store it for a couple of days, until I can get a really heavy duty temporary storage container for it (I know a fish store a few hours away that has something that should be perfect for this).

Anyway, it was going to be an inevitable fact that I eventually got one of these for my large multi mantis systems, its a Odontodactylus scyllarus (The Peacock) and it will be going in the middle tank on STAND B (its a large tank plenty of room for the stomatopod 900mmLx300mmWx300mmH) the creature itself is stated at being around 100mm long.

Here is a pic of it.

As I said I just hope transport and everything goes all good being a slightly touchy species...

More to come as I get info/details.

Not sure if the white on its rear swimmer is from damage or if its the color pattern but I am 60% sure its recovering from damage.

Having said that I do like its coloration being more towards the Red/Maroon side rather then the typical greens =) how long it holds up like that would be beyond me.

Very nice looking Peacock... Congrats!

I don't want to keep my hopes up rite now as I said there an above avg care species and I just hope it survives the transport however once its in my possession I will treat it like it were my own flesh and blood.

The white is normal coloration, I think. I've seen it on the uropods of quite a few peacocks. Just based on the carapace color, I'd say it's a female, though of course you have to look at the undercarriage to know for certain.

I've seen it before too but its never been in a "pattern" sense aka only on one of the uropods and I can't say I am 110% positive but the times I have seen it (pritty sure they mention it in Nat Geo's Ninja Shrimp episode) about how when one of the peacocks that swims past on screen has that white "blotch" its a wound healing, not 110% though.

Find out tomorrow when I get the critter tho =)

That wound healing bit is interesting. My last peacock had them, and she had some serious injuries that were healing - missing eye, two missing maxillipeds, etc. So I guess it's possible that it's a sign of ill-health. They worried me at first, but after looking around they seemed common enough that I thought they were if not "normal" then at least accepted variation.

It's official now.

Full payment has been accepted (or gone through anyway) and they rang me just the to confirm it.

Peacock will be sent Monday and I shall get it either late Monday or at latest early Tuesday morning.

As I said thought I am not keeping my hopes up that high not until the mantis is here in my tank and safe =)

Might be a light angle maybe or just its color.

I'm trying to find in the 45min video where they said "This one has taken damage and the white is the part healing" not sure yet though but most colors on stomatopods that I have seen bare symmetrical patterns, the left matches the right.

That was what made me think it wasn't an injury, was the unlikelihood of both sides being damaged in the exact same spot. However, if it is some kind of molt-related injury or problem, then maybe that's what you'd expect to see.

I couldn't find it in that video "Ninja Shrimp" and the couple of Peacocks I did see with the white "patching" had it in a pattern on the other side of there body in the same spot and pattern =) so I am going to say that its NOT healing from damage.
