Horrible carpet anemone Mishap

So, I went to dose my tank with B Ionic tonight and some of the dry crust from the Alkalinity buffer came off the side of the cap I was using and slowly floated towards the Carpet anemone. I tried to grab it but was not fast enough.

The moment it hit the Nem it shrank a little at first. Then 5 seconds later it shrank violently "mind you, this is a 8'' anemone" so i gave it about 10 min then went to see if it was reponsive. The moment I touched it the stinging cells just tore right off. It was done for.

I pulled it from the tank and it just split into two pieces and I was forced to put him in a bag and into the trash.

Is there anything I need to be worried about? I removed the anemone within 10 min of the initial reaction.

Also has this happened to anyone else?

and finally, Is anyone looking to get rid of a carpet? I would like to get a replacement for my clowns.

Do you have any pictures of the carpet before this happened? I find it highly unusual a little alkalinity completely devastated your anemone. Also do you have a sump w/ your tank? If so I would recommend doing all of your dosing in the sump going forward.

I do have a pic from a week ago. I'll post later. It was very healthy and was with me for some time. Yea it was my mistake. I meant to put it in the overflow but the flake got away.

Your anemone did not died from the Sodium Bicarb flake. It could burn a few tentacle off and that is about it. Been there, done that. It likely dying or else you were too rough removing him from the tank.
If he smell horrible when you removed him they he is already dying before this ever happen, If he did not smell, then you jump the gun and was too rough in removing him.

+1 A flake of alk crust will not suddenly melt a healthy anemone.

BTW, doing alkalinity of the two park additive will quickly increase pH of the tank by a lot. You really need to drip them, or else you really stress the more sensitive animals in your tank. If you have a pH probe, you will see what I mean.

It was completely health prior to the flakes. I know now that If I had given it time, it may have recovered, but when I touched it the tentacles came right off so I assumed it was probably done fore..

For refference here are some photos of the nem just over a week before it happened. As you can tell it looks perfectly fine.

Carpets, both Haddoni and Gigantea are really sticky. Tentacles will stick to fish and your hand and will not let go and just get rip right off if the fish is big or if you pull your hand out. This is normal for carpet.
I am sorry that you lost your very nice, healthy carpet.

Still don't think its the Alk flake. I have accidentally spilt substantial quantities of aiptasia x on my gigs and although it ****ed them off for a few minutes they were back to normal within an hour.

O man, I agree you could of given it more time to recover, You'd be surprized at how time cures all. Even after it split you could of saved it. Nothing to worry about now except making more bad decisions and yes Dose in sump.

Gigs aren't like BTAs where they can split and survive.

:-( now I feel horrible. It was a very nice carpet. Well at least I have learned my lesson "Time heals".

Thanks for your help guys! Now I have to search for a replacement, was thinking a carpet or a retteri.
