how do new philly reefers find this club?

if a new reefer in the philly area gets on rc, how do they find this club?

the name gives no indication of it. i went to school in philly for 6 years and if i scanned the club forums i would never come to the realization that this club, unless someone mentioned it, is a philly club.

sorry for my ignorance with the name selection but i dont get it. atleast the name parc makes sense. dont get me wrong, i support the members in this club more but i dont get the rationality behind the name.

maybe someone can explain to me how the name helps new reefers find out about dvrc

We encompass more than Philadelphia. The Delaware Valley is a term that is accepted in everything from Encyclopedias to every major media outlet in the area. When your turn on NBC 10, CBS 3, of ABC 6...they define themselves as the major media outlets in the Delaware Valley market...not just the Philadelphia market. I have known about the term Delaware Valley since an early age. It is nothing new.

Therefore in order to welcome reefers from Delaware County, Bucks County, Montgomery County, Chester County, and some of the other bordering counties in New Jersey and the state of Delaware...the group as a whole felt that Delaware Valley Reef Club was one that spoke of all of its members....not just one specific area they live in...ie...Norristown Area Reef Club.

As most clubs go...word of mouth is the major factor in realizing a club is around and joining that club. So far the amount of positive response this club had generated, and the number of attendees at the meetings so far has far outnumbered other clubs in the area with a more specific area name.

thanks for the explanation. was just trying to understand the rationality. sorry i did not grow up in philly as you have, was not aware that this club pertained to such a broad area. thank you for giving me an explanation for my ignorance on this matter. your insight and knowledge is very encompassing.

ill make sure i look at some references before making a comment in this forum in the future......

I think EMBRYOGUY has a valid point that we should consider in promoting the club. If we are trying to use the internet or RC to promote DVRC on top of other ways(e.g., word of mouth, swaps), I think we should definitely key on "Philadelphia" somewhere in the description or internet keyword search. I think most reefers in our area use the Philadelphia keyword before Delaware Valley.

i was simply trying to help the club since im friends with some members. but stix response has a defensive tone that i do not appreciate.

well said jgat. thats the point i was trying to get across.....

It's usually hard to tell "tone" on the boards.... I mistake it often!
If anyone should think b4 typing it's me!!! And my tone seems to be the easiest to decipher incorrectly!

Anyways you post very valid questions that have been discussed at meetings and such. The early/present membership cover the entire Delaware Valley so it was decided an apt name geographically. The philly area has and will continue to be included prominently in the clubs description and its' purpose tho. Search RC using keyword philly and the club already comes up actively on the the returned results.
I had originally found PARC before I found NJRC (which also kind of overlaps the regions.) Word of mouth and club dynamics since back then has gotten NJRC a MUCH higher profile in the hobby and therefore imagine I would find that one..... and be attracted to it..... before PARC today. IMO
As a result I think the present and future value of DVRC to its members is likely going to be the best way others hear about it early on. It's a club to keep an eye on as an observer - and to become part of as a new member. Again just my opinion :)

this is a great discussion topic as when i initially heard the term i was thrown off by it. but i did my research and then it made complete sense.

i suggest that we change the description of the club to read

"We are a club of marine aquarium hobbyists in the Greater Philadelphia, Northern Delaware and Southern New Jersey areas (Delaware Valley). Members, from beginner to advanced, meet monthly for information sharing, reef talk, coral frag trading.
"

Therefore, if a person is searching through the group forums and sees the DVRC Group forum, at least they'll get a better understanding of it from the description...

EMBRYO...I hope you didn't take anything I was saying as derogatory or anything negative. I was simply trying to answer your question. I too think that a descriptive of who we are and where we serve can focus more on those things. You only asked about the name though...so I was just trying to give you an idea of how I saw it.

ribs, you're absolutely right. i'll let matt handle that as he's the one that's been in touch with the powers that be on RC...

Huey,

Its funny how different people can read the same text and draw different meaning. These forums are a great aid to providing communication within the reefing community. The downside is that people who can be very personable (when you meet them in person) can come across as boors on these threads. My feeling is that its incredibly hard sometimes to get thoughts across in writing. Much easier to talk with someone face to face.

I thought Stix hit it right on the head:

Therefore in order to welcome reefers

The name was picked to be inclusive of a wide area.

Thanks for asking the question. As someone born and raised in the "Delaware Valley" I wouldn't have thought twice about the name. You offer a different perspective. Sounds like we have to include all of the geographical search words in our mission statement.

Are you serious? How old are you?

ok, ok, we already handled the missed tone, no need to go on about it..

I will ask RC to update the description of this forum...
