it is nearly impossible to cut those plastic ora coral plugs unless u use a dremmel tool to cut the base off. i am thinking of removing the entire coral from the plug but im worried about additional stress, especially if it is encrusted.

how should i go about it?

I dremel off the point of the plug so the base is flat... slap some reef gel glue on it, and put it in place and be sure to hold it for a few mins to allow it to cure and secure a bit... jmo

I drill a hole in a piece of smaller rock/rubble, and then glue it into that. Then I place that rock in the tank and I start it lower in the tank and slowly raise it up to it's permanent location. You can then glue/epoxy the smaller rock where you want it.

I take a knife and pry it off the plug. I hate plugs lol. And then I keep small pieces of rock to glue them to and then glue the rock into my tank. Makes it easier in case I ever want to move one

I took take it off the plug if possible. I too hate plugs. There are couple pieces that are not worth taking of the plug (hawkins, phils, soli) are a few that come to mind. I have found deep holes where the plug goes all the way in. EVERYONE complains about these plugs and ORA doesn't listen. If you want proprietary plugs fine, but at least make them out of something we can cut.

if you need to get them out of the plug all you have to do is squeeze the plug with some vise grips or something like that and it will pop out

i have a few frags coming wednesday. if they are encrusted i plan to just cut the base off. if not i might mount them on some frag disks. i dont mind those to much. i have some 1" disks that blend in well.

i wife always asks, "why cant u remove those ugly black plugs ?"

Pry the coral with a chisel or use a dremel, then super glue it in place. I used to use AquaMend but it's really tedious. I buy a package which has three tubes of super glue from the dollar store and use a tube on each coral.

+1, this is exactly what I do now.

Either pop if off or cut it off. I've cut them off with a pair of dikes but always manage to break a couple branches off in the process. Used a bandsaw the last time I had to do it and it was flawless. A couple of plugs that I left whole and glued in I can't even see them any more though. So I guess with some patience and time it really doesn't matter.

the corals i recieved yesterday have encrusted onto the plug. for these i plan to just cut the bottom off with a dremmel. for now i just placed them in a frag rack. ill will give them a few weeks to light acclimate then ill cut the bases off.

I agree 100%! ORA plugs are terrible!

I dont buy them unless the LFS has a way to cut the plug for me. Its happened multiple times that they couldnt so I just walked away. Those plus are terrible and I dont have a way at home of cutting them myself, and im not removing rock to drill a hole..
