how does a clown fish feed it's host?

I've read many threads saying they do that so feeding the nem isn't that important. But if I'm just feeding my clowns flake food this is not possible. If I drop very small pieces of say shrimp would the clownfish actually take it to the nem, thus feed it? I don't think my clowns are that smart, but guess I could be wrong!

Sometimes mines do. They most of the time don't care. so don't rely on them...

According to Fautin & Allen, they've never viewed it happening in the wild.

What we see happening in our tanks is not the clown intentionally feeding the host nem. They are simply taking food back to their house, and their house happens to eat the food.

Usually, my clowns take the food away from the mouth and eat it themselves, or just fling it out into the water column. jerks.

Well the most common way the clown would feed is simply...poop...cause they all do and the nem will filter feed.

If you are lucky and your clown/s are good hosts, they will actually spit food into the nem, and I've had some clowns that did this at every feeding before even feeding for themselves.

Fautin and Allen may not have observed this in the wild, but who's to say the clowns they observed were comfortable w/ their presence enough to act naturally( Though I still greatly respect them and their research, I just would not assume they are 100% correct on everything)

Really though, the reason people will say you do not have to spot feed is because light is their main source of energy, w/ good lighting a healthy nem does not require spot feeding at all.
