How high are your lights above your tank? I have been looking to build a canopy and thought about suspending them in the hood, high enough to do tank maint. Any thoughts?

Oh yes, I am running 6-T5's. Right now they are on a 4x4 block that sits on each end of the tank.
Thoughts on how high T-5 can be? 75gal tank

About 8" and I run halides. I still have to build a canopy to match the stand so i'm looking for good plans too. I'm actually considering a homemade pendant of sorts.

We run 1000w halides that are usually at least 18 inches off the water surface, and then an additional 1-5 feet away from the corals below.

On our smaller tank we have T5s that are probably about 6 inches from the water.

with my 150W MH and 2x T5 fixture i have suspended in my canopy i have about 7" between the glass and the water. i wanted it higher so it is easier to do maintenance. also the reason i made my hood open from the front with no frame so it would not get in the way during maintenance.

8-10 sounds right. Just enough so I can fit my elbows in there and burn them when something startles me and I pull my arms back quickly
