How High

I was wondering where everyone runs their collection cup on a skimmer? I have a remora C with a Maxi 1200. It has a band around it to hold the cup in place, (I think everyone knows that but maybe not). So should I run the cup high or close to the unit? Thanks all.

I have that exact skimmer on my 75g. I've had the cup at different heights over the years; right now it's near the lowest it can be set. What you're trying to achieve IMO is skimmate that is not too clear and watery (like lemonade), nor too dark and thick (like coffee). Somewhere between the two (dark green tea) is good. You'll just need to adjust the collection cup until that's what you're getting...takes a little trial and error. And it will change over time, depending on how much waste is in the water column, how efficient the MJ pump is working, and what else you have in the tank producing or removing waste.

Yeah I had mine about half way maybe a little less and was getting a green tinted foam on the top and a greenish water in the bottom, I lowered it today to see if it would take out some liquid. I have read that they can be loud, knock on wood mine is very nice and quite. I did have a problem when I first cut my hood then figured out the plastic intake was touching the wood and slide it back some and fixed it, other than that I have been very pleased. Thanks for the feed back.

lowering the cup will be more watery, try it higher
Right. The lower the cup is, the more watery the skimmate will be; the higher setting will produce thicker, darker skimmate.
