How many tangs can you put in a 125 mixed tank?

I was wondering how many tangs one can put in a 125g mixed tank.there will be corals.what tangs would be best and overall look awsome.i know some tangs require bigger tanks but if bought small and raised till they out grow the tank they can be traded for smaller ones.so dont leave out those.im just looking for ideas.heres a pic of the tank.its going through its cycle so i wont be buying any fish for alittle bit.oh and im waiting for the rest of my powerheads to come.just put this one to have some circulation.its a merinland 900.

May b a kole tang .... Wouldn't put a hippo yellow purple clown sohol or any naso, as well as many others... I believe most tangs should be In an aquarium that is 8+ feet
 
you could do a yellow purple or any of the bristletooth tangs in the tank imo. I would not suggest all of them but definitely 2
 
sure the OP can do what he wants its his tank!...also if your going to keep tangs as with any fish quarantine is key!...I learned the hard way 8 yrs ago! Many species of tangs are more susceptible to marine parisites, when compared to other marine fish
 
ive seen many beautiful tanks on here and on many other sites.and seen a few tangs in them.i like to heare everyones oppinion on this.i thought if there small you can do it but once there to big for the tank you can trade them in. im lost now.

Depends on what kind of tang/ tangs you were thinking about!
 
Fingazz, while I am by no means an advocate of putting ultra large fish in small tanks, but the reality is even the smallest fish is going to be to big for our glass cages. You just got to use your best judgment on this and IMO any fish that doesnt get over 8 inchs would be suitable for this tank as long as you do not but more then 2 or 3 of them in there that get that large.
 
if you are going to do it though yes try and get small ones and try and make sure it is two of the smaller species of tang
 
well i bought the 125g to move my tangs to it because right now there in my 75g.i had them since they were around 3".now when feeding there always bunched up.when they swim there always bumping into each other.so i figured i go bigger so they have more room to swim and all.and when they get too big for the 125g ill trade them in for smaller ones and start over.till i get that 1000g dream tank i want.

right now what i have for tangs are.
yellow tang
sailfin tang
blue hippo tang
scopas tang

im also going to get a Lieutenant Tang and maybe another naso tang.havent decided yet.my 75g is my reef/fish mix tank and i will frag peices from it to add to the new 125g and add more corals to it.heres some pics of the 75g.

I don't keep tangs myself however if I were an owner of your tank I would put 3 tangs max in that tank. Out of the three you have the Scopas, Yellow, and Blue would be fine imo for the duration of their lives. I wouldn't add more tangs. The Blue tang could use a bigger tank though, but that's just my "feeling". To be frank majority of tanks are too small for tangs when compared to nature so like mthomp said use your best judgement.

That looks like a pretty long tank at 6' I assume. I am not sure what people want. I guess they want for you not to buy a Tang and let the guy with the 20 gallon buy it. If I had that tank I would not hesitate to put a Tang or two in it. Nothing is going to simulate a trillion gallon real ocean. Your 120g long is about as good as it gets for any fish.
 
Most tangs would do fine in there, with the exception of the large ones like the Naso's, Viligminigi's, full grown Sailfin's, Unicorn's, etc... Basically anything over 10" when fully grown.

With a 6' tank, you have options, regardless of what the purist's say. Find some that you like and give it a shot. Do remember though, that while the tank may be large enough, you'll likely encounter compatibility issues, some tangs just don't like to share.

that is true my friend.every fish comes from the ocean or tropical waters.if i hit the lotto i build like i said a 1,000g tank and i bet even then i can only put 3 tangs in it.i think if a fish is bought small then a 75-125g is huge to them till they get big and then its a small world for them at that time its time to trade them in for smaller ones.i like to here everyones thoughts.so chime in.

yeah my scopas thinks owns the tank when new fish are put in.a hr or 2 later there sharing seaweed and best friends.i do research before i buy fish.i do have some what of a reef tank so i have to make sure certain fish will work.
 
Remember too that when you go to net them out to trade them in you are going to have a job with all that live rock. So, I would sell the sailfin and keep the other 3 for life in there. That's it, just the three, until you can upgrade to an 8 or 10 foot tank. There are tons of other fish that would be nice in a tank that size.
