how many tangs in a 180 reef tank?

I was just wondering what everyone thought about adding a 5th tang to my tank? I have a red sea sailfin, purple, yellow and powder brown in my tank now. I would like to add a powder blue but wasnt sure if that many would get along. They do pretty good now, some bossing but not too bad. I bought the brown to see how it would do ich wise. Needless to say all my fish are now in hypo salinity and doing good. Had to set up a hospital tank. Thought since I now have a good qt system why not try and powder blue?
thanks for your input

I think most here would say you're past the limit already, and a Powder Blue with a Powder Brown in a 180 is asking for trouble.

I wouldn't add anymore. I also would never risk two powders together as they will most likely be extremely aggressive towards each other.

Man, I'm jealous. My new tank is a lot smaller, and I already miss keeping tangs. I'd say you've got a nice thing going. Red sea sailfin and purple are two of my favorites. You could always swap out the powder brown and add the powder blue...

Wouldn't add anything because things that you would add would have similar body shapes. What are the other fish in the tank?

Pretty much agree with everyone else here.

I'd give my 2 cents but since I have 10 tangs in my 210gal it'd be bad advice lol

how many tangs in a 180 reef tank?

I had 6 tang in my old 180. Here the order of how they were add to the tank too
First off is my baby boy, Midnight the sohal tang. Then was a purple tang, fallowed by a yellow and a blue that were pretty much on there death bed when given to me. Then a clown tang, and last but not least is the smallest of them all the sailfin tang.

There all still with me, currently in a 300.

My point is don't let anyone tell u that nothing is possible. I find that most reefers are closet haters, and don't want to see others with better thing then them selfs.

Sohal and clown tang? Aren't those like the biggest jerks of all? Nice work keeping those happy.

Watched the video, amazing. Maybe the prettiest hippo tang I've ever seen.

I'm nervous about doing 7 in a 470.

Have the following right now:
- Black
- Yellow
- Chevron
- YB Blue

Want to add:
- Zebra
- Gem
- Achilles
- Achilles Hybrid (Possibly...)

Had a Purple and Tomini in there as well, but after all being together for about 8 months, the Yellow and YB Blue decided to kill them over a two day span. They've all been fine since.

The clown and sohal have their moments like any married couple do [emoji12] but for most part they get along fine.
I've had the sohal for four years and he has always been the dominant tang in any tank he's been in.
The clown came from a 250 and he was a total *****. He had even killed wrasses and any other fish his owner tried adding to the tank.
So when I got the clown his past owner thought it was going to be an all out war between the sohal and clown. But not at all the clown took his place a 2nd dominant fairly quick.

I have 3 tangs in my 180, a powder blue, a yellow tang and a kole. I probably wouldn't try to add another but, part of that is these are all fairly well established now and I don't think they would react well to newcomers.

I would disagree about envy being the motivating factor on fish (tang) advice. If I was asked about your tangs in a 300 i would say not advisable. Imo, they will look unnatural in your tank in a short amount of time, does that mean it is not possible? Obviously no"¦.I recently helped remove a giant Sohal Tang from a 1000 gallon tank that was being dismantle and the fish was big enough to eat: well over a foot. It even looked too large for that tank, imo. Reminds me when I had Oscars, and if that's the look you prefer, more power to you; but to suggest people are "œhaters" is a bit much!!!!

My tank has the 4 tangs, moorish idol, 4 clowns, melanarus wrasse, green chromis, 2 anthias and a dragon goby. I might have to sell off the powder brown and run a powder blue through qt after the others are through hypo and back into the display tank. I think I will also remove the chromis and goby while I can easily pull them. Ive tried 2 blues before and lost both of them to ich but I never qt'd them. The powder blues are almost too beautiful to resist. I actually didnt think of pulling the powder brown, thanks for all the ideas.

+1 more importantly success is measured in years and decades, not months. When the clown and sohal are full grown we will see how it works out in a 300g. Envy isn't the motivating factor in people advising against it.
