For all those sps keepers i am looking to see how much you dose a day because I want to turn away from my calcium reactor.. Right now I am at 40ml of alk and 20ml of calcium and 5ml of mag a day...My tank is 300gal but very small frags and some colonies.

Please write how many gals is your tank and how much daily!!!

I'm dosing about the same on my 75g. 45ml of alk and roughly 20 of calcium and mag dosed when necessary. I'm manually dosing it throughout the day but I really really want to upgrade to a dosing system!!

120g system and I dose 80ml of recipe 1 Alk and 70 ml of Ca per day with a Bubble Magus doser. I dose Mag manually, once per week or so.

A question- do you know how much ca,mag is in the volume you dose? Or is it a ready to use solutions you are using?

to put it another way, what is the concentration of your dosing volume?

Sorry if thats a silly question, just got into this hobby

There are ready made dosing solutions though once you get going with it it's less expensive to mix your own. Many people use "Randy's Recipe" 1 or 2. 1 provides a slight pH up effect which is generally a good thing for many. Recipe 2 does not elevate pH.

I get Arm & Hammer baking soda (sodium bicarbonate - alk supplement) from Costo in 13lb bags and calcium chloride (calcium supplement), magnesium chloride and magnesium sulfate (mag supplements) from Bulk Reef Supply. Mix with warm water according to recipe and you're good to dose.

On my 75g sps tank I use Kalk in the ATO. I am adding 5 1/2 tsp to 5 gallons of top off water. Keeps alk at 9 and cal 450-460. I rely on water changes to replenish mag to the tank but if needed I will add Brightwell's liquid mag. My mag stays around 1200. I will normally add a little mag to my new salt water as well because the Coralife salt I am using is at 1200. For now this is working well for me and has been for a while now. If I need to increase ca, alk and mag demands I will most likely be looking into a ca RX, 3 part is just to costly IMO.

In my 75g, full of softies, LPS and SPS, I dose 52ml, 54ml per day for Alk and Cal, respectively using dosers. The Alk is kept at around 8.8 dKH and calcium is at 460 ppm.
I don't dose Mg at all because of the bi-weekly water change with RC. It is always kept at around 1480.

I think threads like this can be misleading to many new people who read them. Every tank has it's own demand and every brand and mix is different.

A more appropriate topic IMO would be what levels people are maintaing and which brand test kits they are using

I agree. What amount ppl dose (including myself) doesn't really mean squat. A person who is trying to learn more about dosing for alk, ca and mag would first need to test his water with some good test kits, to see what his tank is using up on a day to day basis. Then get a product that can be used to maintain that... I posted what my tank uses up daily earlier as well, but I guess I could have said I dose eleventy billion ml of baby tears lol. :crazy1:

what are good test kits for mag,cal,alk.....ive been using api and my levels take forever to show a change

28g SPS/clam dominant. 8mL Ca, 12mL Alk, 3 mL Mg daily.

Same size tank (30g total volume), also SPS/clam, just upped to 12 ml/day - on both Ca and Alk. Used to be different ratio, now they're equal at the moment.

Target levels are 420/8.

I shoot for 1340 on Mg. I add a couple glugs of solution per week.:)

i have 28-30g(34G solana) total volume as well. and only few sps frags, 1 lps and several zoas. i am dosing about 15ml/day for both parts. It seems i am dosing a little more than it needs. Parameters look stable, where did they go? precipitating?

Precipitating or perhaps you aren't using a reef salt with good levels from the start? Sounds like it's definitely not your livestock. :)

The older your tank gets the more it should consume. Don't compare your tank to anybody elses, just rely on your test kits to keep things stable. My 40 + 30 sump consumes about 250 ml's of each part a day, my 90 + 45 sump consumes over 400 ml's a day. I remember 3+ years ago before I bought dosing pumps adding 20-40 ml's a day and thinking that was a lot. Buy a good test kit and trust it.
