how much daily evaporation

So how much daily evaporation are you guys getting? How big of a tank do you have and what kind of cooling mechanism are you using? I imagine someone using a fan would evaporate significantly more than someone running a chiller?

Not in my personal tank, but a client's 290 with 4x400W and 6x95w VHOs is burning through 8 gallons per day with a chiller

About 700 or so gallons, I'd say 10 gallons or so a day, no fans or chillers. Lot of surface area on many tanks though. In the summer I have some fans to kick on at 84 degrees so there is more evaporation then.

thx guys! anyone in the smaller ~200g range? :) should I expect more or less ~5g a day of evaporation?

I'll be watching this, as I am setting up a 240 gal with another 6 in the sump. My guess would be that it depends more on surface area than volume.

1000 gallons and about 3-4 gallons per day.

you have a 1000g but only 3 or 4 gallons a day ?!? how did you do that? :)

Wouldn't this vary quit a bit depending on local variants in humidity ?? as well as the temp.

yes i think it depends on a lot of things such as surface area, temp, whether you use fans or chiller, etc... i am just trying to get a general sense, not exact. obviously, having X gallons of evaporation in Y gallon of tank is pretty meaningless without knowing the other factors. :)

Dedicated equipment room that is sealed and a 1 ton Mitsubishi split AC;)

240 gallon tank, chiller (that never comes on), a 9 inch fan aimed at the surface of my water, room temp around 78F, and a dehumidifier in the room...I lose about 3-5 gallons per day.

Lighting also plays a big factor. Those running 400w MH's are definately dealing with more evap than those running t5's, LED's or even 250w MH. I'm also thinking of how big of a holding tank i'll need for my future tank. I think I'm going to have to just wait and see.

Also, your skimmer makes a difference. My Aqua C EV400 evaporates a lot more than my old Octopus NW200. Also, if you have any submersible pumps in your sump, those may contribute. I purposely have only purchased lower heat pumps (Eheim and Mag, with Mag being the colder one).

Good point, Amanda. When I first set it up, I was running my system (450gals) w/o skimmers and the evaporation was less than 2gals a day. As soon as I put the skimmers on line, evaporation jumped up to 6gals a day!

If you are trying to figure out how large an evaporation reservoir you will need for an automated system, I have always figured 10-15% per week. As stated in other posts there are many variables to consider.

Thats what I plan on doing. I'm using marco rock and after I clean it off I plan on using them along with a few lbs of LR to get the cycle going. During this time I'll run the full system and do any adjusments and check out my evap.
