How much flow do i need?

I plan on upgrading my PH's in my 90 gallon dominate SPS tank. I'm going to go with Tunze's. I plan on getting 2 Tunze 6055's so that will bring me to around 3,000 gph not including the return is that enough or should i add more?

If you just have the two 6055's and the return then you will likely want more flow then that. I'm running a k-4, a k-3 and a 6055 and I'm going to add another 6055 soon. I'm running LPS and Softies so I'm sure your going to want more then the two 6055's

It's hard to have too much flow. I'm running two 6055's, two vortechs, a Tunze wave box, a reef flow snapper gold(2600gph) with OM four way closed loop. My returns are an Iwaki RLT40 and RLXT20. This is all on a 137g display.

If I were you I would look at a couple of the larger tunze streams or think of adding a vortech or two.1

Total circulation rates for SPS generally go from 40x total system volume up to ~100 x.

I always thought you wanted those ranges (40-100) x display volume, not total system volume... if you're right I'm way underpowered (I have much more volume in the rest of my system other than the display tank)

More the better

More the better

My 2 cents - As long as it doesn't blow dirctly on your SPS and kill them, more is much better.

Hummmm, interesting concept, so we just ignore the sump volume huh? NO wonder many have so many problems.

Geez dude, don't know what to tell you, I'm going by what the exp peeps on here have been doing for a long time...successfully.
3-5x turnover for sump return, 40x and more on display.
My tanks have been great.

Its an estimate with a very wide range. Since its a reasonable, though not perfect, estimate that sump volume is 20% to 30% of display, we could have just as easily said 32 to 80 times total system volume and ended up in the same place. I'm believe though that there are several reasons its display volume thats relevant. Most of the deitritus is generated in the display, the corals that require the flow are housed in the display and the majority of most people nooks and cranies that need clearing out are in the display. If you have a 50g with a 1000g sump, no estimate is really going to be appropriate, you will have to work out the benefits and costs for your self. In the end though, the error bar in the estimate is way bigger than the variability in sump sizes; I doubt the latter issue has much effect on anything.
