How much lighting should I use over a 20 gal long.

How much lighting should I use over a 20 gal long, 30 x 12 3/4 x 13 tall. Iwant to keep BTA green & rose plus clownfish. I was thinking 250 watt MH 10,000 K.

youd be fine running a 150-175 over the tank, but the sides will be a little shadier if you run it in the center.

thanks for your reply. If I'll be ok running 150 to 175 watts I may just go with 4-40 watts HO for a total of 160 watts. It would most likely keep things alot cooler than a MH bulb. What do you think.

I have 220w of PC over my 20L SPS tank.

I am sure that 160w of any type of fluorescent is plenty of light. One of the reasons I chose a 20L is the ease of lighting a shallow tank.

BTW: You'll want to stick with a smaller clown species in that tank. I don't think a clarkii complex would be very happy in there.

Are you going to plumb it for a sump?
