how much live rock should i have in a 24g nc

I was told that it goes 1:1 So one pound of L.R for every gallon. It's always best to double that to 2:1 2 pounds of L.R for every gallon, helps the cycle and helps mantain stable params.

I have around 30 lbs of LR in my 24g NC. It's quite a bit for that little tank, especially if you are using light rock. If you go for 40+ lbs you probably won't have much room for anything else. :)

Bud set one up two weeks ago- used 20lbs of lalani or whatever that stuff from drs s+f is and 10 lbs of fijji. Borderline too much rock- super cool looking, but once he starts getting corals and their attendant rocks he will have some on the side to be sure. That figures out to 1.5 lbs per gallon. His magic number would have been 25lbs or 1 to 1. It really comes down to density of rock. I have had as much as 22 or as little as10 in a 10gallon.

I'm getting an Aquapod 24 for the kids for Christmas. Drs. F&S offer the "Select Fiji Premium LR" in 22 or 45 lb. boxes. Which would be best? They recommend 1.25 to 1.75 lbs. per gallon. I was thinking of getting the 45 and have 3 lbs. left over. Would I be better off going with the 22 lbs.?

At least 1 lb per gallon. Anymore will be better for the tank. Though it is really a personal preference, just at least 1 lb per gallon & you'll be fine. My brother got 18 lbs for his 24 g Aquapod & he wants a few more pounds.

Ok, so I'm thinking...get the 22 lbs. from F&S and if it looks really barren, pick up a couple extra pounds from the lfs. It's much more expensive per pound and won't look the same, but I can get a couple big pieces and bury it underneath. It'll be a brand new tank, so this shouldn't be an issue, right? Sound feasable?

remeber, even tho 22 pounds might not be enough to start and have a 1:1 ratio, you if you add medium or big corals they come attached to more LR.

I have an AquaPod 24, with 28 lbs Live Rock and 30 lbs Live Sand. An additional 3 lbs of Live Rock rubble in the filter area.

This brings my total water volume to only 18 gallons:eek2:

It is pretty full in there, barely room for the corals. My aquascaping takes the reef all the way to the top.

Remember you can ditch (recommended) all the filter material in the back and replace it with live rock pieces. This ammount adds to the total LR in your tank.

ReefBug,
Wouldn't you have to add other filters and stuff?
The reason we're going for the AP24 is the prepackaging. I don't know enough to start choosing this filter or that one, this pump or that one, etc.
I really don't want to mess anything up. I'm nervous as it is!!

You can go either way really. The ceramic rings & thick sponges they come with can become nitrAte traps. They should be rinsed monthly ONLY in Old Tank water. Of course putting live rock rubble back there is probally your best bet.

Some people have gotten carried away with the idea that if some is good, more must be better. This is not true! As with all concepts of reef keeping, balance is very important here. If you have too much live rock, you will have dead spots on it. These are areas of live rock that are covered with other rock, blocking some surfaces from light and water circulation. These dead spots are likely to trap waste, sediment, uneaten food, and many other products you would otherwise remove regularly. This is referred to as "stacking" the rock. The correct amount of live rock to have in a reef tank is between a minimum of 1 pound per gallon and a maximum of 1.75 pounds per gallon. Somewhere in the middle, like 1.35 pounds per gallon, would be ideal.

Dustin,
So if I took the sponge and rings out, and put LR rubble in, is there anything else I'd have to do? Is that in itself better than the sponge and rings?
I must be missing something here.
Ellio,
My choices are the 22 of 45 lb boxes at this point. I haven't found anything else, say 30 lbs, at a comparable price. I'm more than willing to go elsewhere, I just hadn't found another source other than the lfs or Dr f&s.
I also asked this in another forum, but haven't gotten any answers yet, how many plugs are there to the Aquapod 24? Are they all three prong plugs?
I'm wondering if I can use one of the power strips with timers to turn the lights on and off.

The only source of filtration in my tank is the live rock and live sand. Ontop of my rubble in the filter chamber I have a bag of Chemi-Pure. Ontop of that is cheap filter floss that I toss out, not rinse, toss out each and every water change, which for me is 2x a week.

I have had many reef tanks, and this one is by far my favorite. I love the AP and its ease of maintanence. Yes, ditch the rings and the sponges, unless you can be diligent about rinsing and cleaning. Even then , I would not recommend it. Your live rock IS your filtration system.

There are 4 plugs to the AP. 3 lights (2 are three pronged and the LED), and the pump.

I see you are new to the hobby slam308. Do lots of research and decide what kind of tank you want first, FS-FOWLR- a reef, corals, etc. Then do even more research. This site has a wealth of information.

But first, before you do anything, or spend any money, you must determine what kind of tank you want, and what you want to keep. This will determine everything from your filtration system to your aquascaping.

I hope this helps and I'm not sounding like I'm preaching. Just trying to save you $$ and headaches and confusion!

ReefBug,
All help is appreciated.
We're shooting for FOWLR. I already ordered a lot of the stuff from DrF&S and it's on it's way. I got the Bahama Aragamax (??), something like that, not the live sand.
The fish-wish list so far is...
2 clowns
six line wrasse
neon goby, engineer goby, or both (don't know yet)

I think I've finally convinced my stepson he's NOT getting a lion fish!!!!!

We all realize it'll likely be months before any or all of these fish are in the tank, but so far, that's what they're looking at.
Oh yeah, almost forgot the $800 Hawaiin Dragon Eel....like THAT'S gonna happen!

I was told to wait a month or so after putting the first fish in before doing the snail, hermit crab thing.

Thanks for the plug count, that'll help a lot with our prep and set-up before the stuff gets here.

Another question for the masses.
I ordered 30 lb. of sand. Is this enough? As I said above, it's the Bahama Aragamax sand from Drs F&S.
Is that enough for a 24? We'd like to get one of the little fish that scoop up the sand and spit it out their gills. I not sure if that's a goby or a blenny. I think the guy at the lfs said they'd be okay for a nano and okay with the fish we're hoping to get.

The fish species that you speak of is the goby. Fascinating and fun to watch.

I'm not sure on the depth of sand they need, maybe someone else can advise you on that one. Try posting that ? in the fish forum.

I have 30 lbs of sand in my 24, and it is purfect for my requirements. But, again, I don't have a goby. But I do have a Red-Spotted Perch, which is a mud dweller. they build caves in the sand and he doesn't have any issues with the depth.

HTH
