how much more salt?

after running my first batch of salt water, I added 13 cups of salt to 26.66 gallons of water which resulted in a reading of 1.023.

Is there an equation that will help m figure out how much salt i need to add to this batch to bring it up to 1.026?

can you help me. i filled out all the info in the left column on that site.......wasnt sure how to figure out the last field on the left: grams in 35 grams of salt

once i entered in the info on the left, i clicked calculate both nothing happened. do i have to fill out the right column? if so, how do i figure out those answers?

Half a cup of salt to a gallon of water. Or One gallon of SALT to 32 gallons of water, for most mixes. Read your instructions: some do vary. A dry measure is superior to a weight-of-salt calculation because moisture can change that...And ALWAYS level the cup with a knife to get it absolutely the same every time. Use plastic measuring cups. The measure I gave above, for most reef salt mixes, will give you a reliable 1.024, which is where it belongs for a reef. Fish-only salt might vary.

A hint. Once you have FINALLY got a reliable measure of each, dedicate those vessels to this process, with clear indelible markings for level. That way you only have to really sweat this ONCE. And your refractometer should always be your final check.

Thanks for the help.

I have a float valve in my container so the water will be the same height every time. So that should take the guess work out of that too

Figure out exactly how much you need for your regular WC and measure out the rest of the bag of salt at that amount into ziploc bags. When you need to do your next WC, just open a ziploc bag and dump it into the WC bucket.

I find it easier for me to find out what the sg is in my storage container and then add 1 cup of salt, let it mix for an hour or so and remeasure that will tell you how many ppt your sg moves per cup. I find it easier this way because sometimes my storage container isnt always as empty as the last time before i fill it back up.

Hope that makes sence.

again, way over thinking.
I started at 1.023.........trial and error I decided to add a half a cup of salt to the mix.......to see what happens. That took my level to 1.025.

so if i ended up adding too much salt, I would add fresh water to bring it back down........no biggie. just do and learn :)

so i decided to stop at 1.025. I'll make another batch using the 13.5 cup rule that I just applied and see if its the same.

if i can duplicate, I have my go to measurement!!

and i never thought about the baggie idea.....thats frickin genius!!

thanks for the help

Whatever it is you use to store your opened bag of salt in - make sure it is sealed tightly or you will end up with a solid chunk of (now) rock salt. It is still "useable" that way, but it will probably have precipitated out a majority of it's CA/Alk that will not be soluble so you would then have to add more to get back to "normal" levels
