Amount to Feed

The amount of food to feed a fish depends on several factors, including the size of their mouths and stomachs. Martin Moe is the father of marine fish breeding. I once asked him if a good indicator of the size of a fish’s stomach was the size of their eyes, and if that was a good indicator of the proper portion size. In other words, the size of a fish’s eyes indicates the size of the meal portion. He thought that made sense. Of course this assumes that you are feeding for health, growth and breeding, not simply to maintain size.

There are several ways to estimate the proper amount of food. You calculate proper the AMOUNT of food by:

1. Does not go over the overflow before it is consumed
2. Eaten within certain period, say five or ten minutes
3. Each fish gets some food
4. Squabbling begins (fish more interested in social hierarchy fighting than food)
5. Body size
6. Eye size, described above
7. Estimated body weight
8. The size of the mouth
9. Feces appear (fish has enough to digest)
10. Stomach appears full
11. Fish spitting out serving
12. Changes in nitrogen cycle
13. Fish ignore offering
14. Fish holds food in mouth, doesn’t swallow
15. An arbitrarily set amount, like a pinch or two, with no rational basis

Please choose all that apply and let me know if there are others I didn’t think of.

2,7,8 for me and i would say that 12 would be important to make sure youre not overfeeding and causing algae problems

some of my fish have small mouths so they need smaller foods, i also let them eat what they can in 5-10 min, and some of the bigger fish are going to need a lot more than the smaller ones. I mostly feed flakes, small pellets, and frozen meaty foods

I wait until they all get some food. Except the veggy clip, which I just put a little piece in every other day. But I notice if I miss a day and go 3 days without the veggy clip the mood gets more tense in the tank. So I usually make sure I don't miss a day.

OK, only 19 votes, is not a representative poll, but so far we have some pretty conscientious refers here. Almost ¼ of the respondents feed within a certain period, while some feed so that each fish gets some food. Others feed an arbitrarily set amount, or enough that does not go over the overflow before it is consumed.

I feed every other day pretty heavy.... Fish are just as fat as if I was feeding daily.

I think we all under estimate how much we truely overfeed our fish....

I feed almost never....well, once a week. When I do feed I spot feed corals and let the fish eat whats left. My fish are all very fat and healthy just surviving off of the natural reef ecosystem. I would ONLY recommend this if you have a mature reef and have a large enough tank to support the number of fish you have.

guys, guys, guys, I need more votes, votes, votes!

my last food polls changed dramatically with larger responses...

With 34 votes, a dozen reefers feed within a certain period, while 10 people feed an arbitrarily set amount. Seven or eight reefers feed so that each fish gets some food or enough that does not go over the overflow before it is consumed.
